    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a backlight device and a liquid crystal display with luminance and luminance evenness improved through as much reduction as possible of loss of light from LEDs with less man-hour and cost.
    SOLUTION: The backlight device 10 of the liquid crystal display 100 is provided with wiring boards 22 each with a plurality of LEDs 21 mounted, and a reflecting plate 6 equipped with openings 6d for each LED 21 to penetrate and expose itself through. A diameter of each opening 6d is formed larger than that of each LED 21, so that there is a clearance 71 generated between each opening 6d and each LED 21. On the surface of each wiring board 22, white solder resist 61 containing a high light-reflecting material is coated. With this, the white solder resist 61 reflects whatever light travelling between a diffusion plate 4 and the reflecting plate 6 is incident from the LEDs 21 to the clearance 71, so that loss of light can be restrained.

SOLUTION: The polarized light converting unit is provided with a plate- shaped polarized beam splitting element 1. Concerning the polarized beam splitting element 1, a laminate part 4 alternately laminating a high refraction layer 2 composed of the high refractive index material and a low refraction layer 3 composed of the low refractive index material is constituted on the surface of a transparent substrate 5. The laminate part 4 is provided for letting appear the transmission and reflection characteristics of prescribed light by utilizing the interference effect of light by alternately laminating the low refractive index and high refractive index materials. For the low refractive index material, SiO2 or ZrO2 is used and for the high refractive index material, TiO2 or NbO2 is used.

As the optical block 36 is free from the structural problem of a so- called cross prism that the surfaces comprising the dichloic prisms 48, 49 cross two basic prisms, the accuracy in angle of the prism itself and the accuracy in adhesion are not strictly requested.
