    Abstract: A focusing control metahod and apparatus employing a photodetector for generating a focusing error signal, a tracking error signal and an RF signal, and a closed loop focusing servo circuit responsive to the focusing error signal applied thereto for focusing a light spot in position on an optical disc. The focusing error signal is detected synchronously with the tracking error signal to produce a first periodic function signal. The focusing error signal is detected synchronously with the RF signal to produce a second periodic function signal. The tracking error signal is converted into a sin-wave signal having a predetermined amplitude. The RF signal is converted into a cos-wave signal having a predetermined amplitude. The first first periodic function signal is multiplied by the cos-wave signal to produce a first component signal. The second periodic function signal is multiplied by the sin-wave signal to produce a second component signal. The first and second component signals are added to produce a composed disturbance signal. The composed disturbance signal is subtracted from the focusing error signal applied to the focusing servo circuit, thereby canceling a disturbance superimposed on the focusing error signal applied to the focusing servo circuit.

    Abstract: A wave plate retarder consists of a stacked plurality of doubly retracting or birefringent high molecular films laminated with a predetermined angle between their respective optical axes to establish a desired phase difference during transmission through the films of components of light polarized along orthogonal axes. The predetermined angle may be selected to provide a phase difference of 1/4 or 1/2 wavelength of light to thus produce a composite wave plate retarder which functions as a 1/4 or 1/2 wavelength plate regardless of the phase difference of components of light produced by transmission through a single film.

    Abstract: In an apparatus for optically detecting information signals in which light beams for reading information signals and for tracking servo-control are incident on a signal record surface of an optical record carrier through an objective lens so that respective beam spots of the light beams are formed on the signal record surface of the optical record carrier on which a signal record track is formed and a driving operation for a tracking control mirror and a detecting operation for recorded signals on the signal record surface are effected by the use of reflected light beams from the signal record surface, the improvement comprising a time base correction mirror disposed near the objective lens in an optical path of a light beam passing through the lens both on the forward way to and on the backward way from the signal record surface and the tracking mirror disposed near a light beam source, for example, a laser, the both light beams for reading the informtion signals and for the tracking servo-control passing the time base correction mirror on the forward way to and the backward way from the signal record surface and the tracking mirror only on the forward way to the signal surface.
