    Abstract: PURPOSE:To allow an easy and highly reliable orientation treatment even with the liquid crystal display element, etc., by an active matrix system by subjecting the surface, which faces a liquid crystal layer, of one substrate to a rubbing treatment and forming an LB film on the surface, which faces the liquid crystal layer, of the other substrate. CONSTITUTION:The LB film is formed on the surface, which faces the liquid crystal layer, of the one substrate of the liquid crystal display element constituted by crimping the liquid crystal layer exhibiting a twisted nematic phase between a pair of the substrates previously formed with electrodes and the surface, which faces the liquid crystal layer, of the other substrate is subjected to the rubbing treatment. Namely, an adequate pretilt angle theta is attained and the sufficient orientation control power is exhibited by combining the orientation treatment by the LB film and the orientation treatment by the rubbing treatment. The liquid crystal display element having the excellent reliability and electric field responsiveness and a high contrast ratio is obtd. in this way.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To enhance durability and corrosion resistance, to reduce spacing loss and to simplify the manufacture process of the medium by forming a specific polymer Langmuir-Blodgett film on the surface of the magnetic layer. CONSTITUTION:The Langmuir-Blodgett film comprising hydrophilic units linked with covalent bonds and hydrophobic units linked thereto is formed on the surface of the magnetic layer. This enhances the durability and corrosion resistance of the medium and reduces spacing loss. Moreover, the magnetic recording medium can be simply manufactured by developing the Blodgett film on an air-water interface and then transferring the film.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a liquid crystal oriented film having better orientational property by imidizing a Y-type Langmuir-Blodgett film of an alkyl amine salt of polyamic acid. CONSTITUTION:This oriented film is formed by forming imido of the Y type Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) film of the alkyl amine salt of the polyamic acid. The accumulated film of the alkyl amine salt of the polyamide acid prior to imido formation is the LB film of the Y type. Only the required practice to convert the LB film of the alkyl amine salt of the polyamide acid to the Y type is to maintain the L film (Langmuir film) of the alkyl amine salt of the polyamide acid for >=20min in the compressed state, then to transfer the same into a substrate. The polyimide film formed by the imido formation of the Y type LB film of the alkyl amine salt of the polyamic acid exhibits the better orientational property as the liquid crystal oriented film than the film formed by the imidized Z type LB film.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To form a Y type Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) film having a good built-up property and productivity by designing the hydrophobic part of the amine constituting a polyamic acid amine salt as a bulky part. CONSTITUTION:The hydrophobic part of the amine constituting the polyamic acid amine salt of the oriented film for liquid crystals formed by imide conversion of the Y type LB film of the polyamic acid amine salt is designed as the bulky part. The hydrophobic part of the amine is densely oriented with respect to the main chain of the polyamic acid so as not to leave wasteful spaces as far as possible in such a manner, by which the balance of the hydrophilic part and the hydrophobic part is improved. The Y type LB film of the high-quality polyamic acid amine salt is formed at a high speed with the high built-up property in this way.
