Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the cost and the size of the device by arranging the plate type polarized light separating mirrors, whose surfaces are set so that it is tilted to the optical axis of light beams, between picture displaying elements and a light source. SOLUTION: A PS converting unit 15 is used to take out only desired S wave, for example, from parallel light beams LP obtained from a reflection mirror 55 of a light source. When the beams LP are made incident on two polarized light separating mirrors 63, P wave pass the mirrors 63. However, S wave are reflected by the mirrors 63 and reach λ/4 plate mirrors 65. Then, the mirrors 65 reflect the S wave and send the S wave in parallel with an optical axis OP. On the other hand, the P wave passed the mirrors 63 are polarization converted to S wave by a λ/2 plate 67 and send out in parallel with the axis OP. Thus, only S wave are polarization separated from the beams LP and send to the first fly array lens side of a next stage.

Then, the illuminating light reflected by a second reflection mirror 48 is guided to the side of the video display element 53, along a second optical axis OP2 and the first and second optical axes OPI and OP2 are arranged in different positions and in parallel.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To correct the lowering of light quantity even when a devitrification phenomenon occurs. CONSTITUTION:By moving the positions of a reflector 3 or a metal halide lamp 2 on an optical axis, the reflection angle of light reflected by the reflector 3 is changed, and the light which does not pass through a condenser lens 4 because of devitrification also passes through the lens 4, so that condensed light quantity is increased. As a result, the condensed light quantity is not decreased so much even when the devitrification phenomenon caused by the increase of the use time of the lamp 2 occurs.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a light source preventing the decrease of an illumination efficiency while maintaining uniformity good by providing a light emitting hole and a condenser lens arranged in the vicinity of the hole and condensing a luminous flux emitted from the light emitting hole on the entrance pupil of a projection lens. CONSTITUTION:A condenser lens L1 is arranged in the vicinity of the light emitting hole 4 while being confronted with the light emitting hole 4. In this projector light source, a luminous flux emitted from a metal-haloid lamp 1 is reflected at a reflection plane 3 inside a spherical member 2 and emitted outside the spherical member 2 through the light emitting hole 4. Then, the luminous flux made to be a converged light by the condenser lens L1 passes through an image displaying plate 8 and condensed on the entrance pupil of a projection lens L2. In the projector light source, when the reflection plane 3 is made to be an uniform diffussion reflecting plane, the luminous flux emitted from the light emitting hole 4 maintains a good uniformity even in a case that the metal-haloid lamp 1 is not positioned in the center of the spherical member 2.
