A recording apparatus, a recording method, a program for the recording method, a recording medium for recording the program of the recording method, a replaying apparatus, a replaying method, a program for the replaying method, and a recording medium for recording the program of the replaying method are provided to improve random accessibility when a representative image is replayed from the recording medium and detect mismatch between a moving picture file and the representative image simply, easily, and accurately by searching a head of an image to be replayed by using the representative image. A memory controller(22) records a moving picture in a recording medium as a moving picture file. A compression/decompression unit(24) generates a representative image representing a certain group of a frame image configuring the moving picture. A CPU(41) records the representative image in the recording medium as a representative image file. The CPU writes the representative image file by a file structure having a representative image receiving unit and a control information receiving unit. The representative image receiving unit receives the representative image. The control information receiving unit hierarchically receives control information for controlling the replay of the representative image according to a kind of the control information. Information indicating that the information received in the control information receiving unit is control information for controlling the representative image is received in the first layer of the control information receiving unit. Information indicating an update date of the moving picture file is received in the second layer which is lower than the first layer. The control information for controlling the replay of one representative image by the minimum replay unit is received in the third layer which is lower than the second layer.

A recording apparatus of the present invention is a recoding apparatus for recording data to a rewritable record medium, comprising an encoding means for encoding the data corresponding to a predetermined compressing and encoding system, a converting means for converting a data structure of encoded data that is output from the encoding means into a file structure that a computer software program that synchronously reproduces a moving picture and so forth can handle without need to use a special hardware device, and a recording means for recording data having the file structure to the record medium, wherein the file structure has a first data unit, a second data unit, and a data portion, the second data unit being a set of a plurality of first data units, the data portion describing management information, wherein the plurality of second data units is correlated with a successive record length of the record medium, and wherein the data portion contains a time length and a data length of the second data unit recorded in the successive record length.

This invention applies illustratively to the editing of taken pictures by use of a QT format file. An effect track ET is made by setting a null effect having no effect advantage and an active effect having an effect advantage with regard to a video track ST associated with video data management information. The QT format file is made by setting a source track ST as a target for the effect track ET to the video track ST.
