Abstract: A one-directional captive screw attachable to a panel that is hand tightenable, but requires a tool to loosen once hand tightened. The captive screw includes a screw having a head with a recess and a threaded portion, a knob having a central longitudinal axis coaxial with the screw, a one-directional ratchet between the knob and the screw. The ratchet engages to allow the screw to be tightened in a clockwise direction using the knob, and disengages when rotated in a counterclockwise direction, such that a tool is required to loosen the screw by use of the recess.

Abstract: A captive screw assembly 10 is attached to a panel 80, and comprises a screw 30 hand tightenable by means of a knob 20 connected by a one-direction ratchet 43,52 to the screw 30, but requires a tool to be engaged with the drive recess 36 in order to loosen it. The ratchet includes teeth 43 on a ring 40, co-operating with a pawl 52 on a spring 50, also having a tab 51 engaging in notch 35 in flange 34 of the screw 30. Alternatively, the spring 50 may be coupled to the knob 20, not the screw 30. A helical spring 70 urges the knob 20 away from the ferrule 60 which is secured to the panel 80.
