    Abstract: This disclosure relates to an aluminum alloy electrical conductor which contains from about 0.20% to about 1.60% by weight nickel, from about 0.30% to about 1.30% iron, optionally up to 2.00% of additional specified alloying elements, and the remainder aluminum with associated trace elements. The conductors are processed in a continuous operation which includes continuous casting, hot-rolling in the as-cast condition to form continuous rod, cold-working of the rod by drawing it through a series of wire-drawing dies, without preliminary or intermediate anneals, and thereafter annealing the wire to achieve a minimum electrical conductivity of 58% IACS, an ultimate tensile strenght of at least 12,000 psi, a yield strength of at least 8,000 psi and an elongation of at least 12% when measured as a No. 10 A.W.G. wire. The additional alloying elements are precisely controlled in order to facilitate the continuous processing of the cast bar without spitting and cracking of the subsequently rolled and cold-drawn rod.

    Abstract: 1435789 Continuously casting; treating copper rod SOUTHWIRE CO 30 Oct 1973 [30 Oct 1972 26 Feb 1973] 50374/73 Headings B3A and B3F [Also in Division C7] Continuously cast and rolled Cu rod having an oxidized surface layer, as it emerges from the rolling mill, is passed at elevated temperature through a treating zone comprising an openended conduit through which there is passed to contact and thermally shock, and thus to cool and clean said rod, a colder liquid treating composition, containing in aqueous solution an aliphatic monohydroxy alcohol, polyhydroxy alcohol, or ketone, an alkyl- or alkanol-primary-, secondary- or tertiary-amine or a mixture thereof, and having pH>7. The pH may be adjusted with alkali metal hydroxide or Na 2 CO 3 , and the composition may contain a surfactant, chelating agent or an antifoam, e.g. Ca acetate, and may contain wax, through the rod may be be waxed later, just before coiling. As shown, cast bar 12 energes from continuous casting machine 11, is rolled in mill 13, and rolled rod 14 passes through treating zones 15, 17, 19, 21 and pinch rolls 22 to coiler 24. Liquid composition from 30 is pumped to heat exchanger 33 and is fed via 36, 37, 38, 39, to the treating zones and recycled as shown. Figs. 2 to 4 (not shown) illustrate in detail means whereby the rod is treated with the composition concurrently or countercurrently in the various zones.

    Abstract: The disclosed composite conductor has a steel component for supporting the weight of an annealed aluminum alloy -- steel composite overhead electrical conductor. Annealing the high strength aluminum alloy component improves service performance of the conductor by providing for sustained operation at high conductor temperatures without detriment to the mechanical properties thereof. The aluminum alloy component is specially formulated to have a tensile strength in the annealed condition which is substantially equivalent to the tensile strength of hard drawn EC aluminum. Consequently, the conductor of this invention has the strength of prior art cables having hard drawn aluminum components, while at the same time yielding high temperature operating characteristics of prior art cables having annealed aluminum components.

    Abstract: An aluminium alloy conductor having an electrical conductivity of at least fifty-seven percent (57%) based on the International Annealed Copper Standard having increased ultimate elongation, ultimate tensile strength, creep strength, thermal stability, bendability and fatigue resistance when compared to conventional aluminum conductors.     Abstract: A system for treating continuously cast and rolled copper rod using a non-acid liquid treating composition for effecting removal of oxide scale present on the surface of the rod as it emerges from the rolling mill and for cooling the rod prior to coiling. One or more treating zones are provided between the rolling mill and the coiling machine. The treating composition is preferably an aqueous solution including one or more of aliphatic monohydroxy alcohols, polyhydroxy alcohols, ketones; and alkyl and alkanol primary amines, secondary amines, and tertiary amines; or mixtures thereof. The treating solution is recirculated and monitored with the pH being maintained at a value in excess of 7.
