    Abstract: An electric horn, especially adapted for automotive vehicles, includes an improved pole piece and adjusting cap (48) for the driving motor (16). The pole piece and adjusting cap (48), include a cylindrical shank (66) and an enlarged head (68) including a conical flange. The flange terminates in an annular rim (78) which is in contact with and secured to the horn housing (10) by resistance welding. A magnetic circuit for the motor (16) extends from the pole face (74) of the pole piece and adjusting cap (48) through the shank (66) and the head (68) to the housing (10), wherein the cross sectional area for the flux path through the head (68) is at least as great as that in the shank (66) and sufficiently large to avoid undue magnetic saturation. The rim (78) of the enlarged head (68) has a diameter greater than that of the shank (66) and less than the diameter of the housing coil cup (52) to thereby obtain increased stiffness in the connection of the pole piece and adjusting cap (48) with the housing (10).

    Abstract: Adjustment of the pulse energizing frequency and duty cycle of a vehicle horn (60) is described. The horn is blown by a test energizing circuit (102) with a varying pulse frequency and the frequency at which the horn produces the maximum sound pressure level is taken as the predetermined resonant frequency. Then the horn is blown by the test energizing circuit at the resonant frequency with a varying duty cycle and the value of duty cycle which produces a predetermined striking force of the plunger (16, 16') against the pole piece (22, 22') is taken as the predetermined impact-producing duty cycle which is used for setting the operating duty cycle of the horn in a manner depending upon the type of the horn. The horn is then blown by its own electronic energizing circuit (100) and the actual pulse frequency thereof is adjusted, preferably by laser trimming of a resistor (86), to match the resonant frequency. The horn is blown by its own energizing circuit at the resonant frequency and the duty cycle is adjusted.

    Abstract: A vehicle horn with an electronic solid state energizing circuit (100) is described. The horn has an electromagnet for driving diaphragm assembly which has a resonant frequency of mechanical vibration. The energizing circuit generates a DC pulse train for energizing the coil (70) of the electromagnet to drive the diaphragm. The circuit has an adjustment (86) for setting the pulse repetition rate of the pulse train substantially equal to the resonant frequency. It also has an adjustment (92) for independently setting the duty cycle of the pulse train. The circuit further includes a compensator (82) for varying the duty cycle inversely with changes in the supply voltage. An electronic power switch (64) is connected in series with the vehicle battery and the horn coil through an unswitched power circuit. A horn switch (72) is connected in an on/off circuit which connects the battery to a control circuit for generating the pulse train and applies it to the electronic power switch.

    Abstract: A method of making a sound projector of unitary construction for a vehicle horn. A projector body (12) and projector cover (14) are molded of heat weldable plastic material as complementary parts to provide a unitary structure when the parts are joined together. The body (12) is molded with a spiral wall member (28) which defines an open channel (18) extending from a central opening (22) in the body (12) to a bell (24) at the outer peripheral turn. The wall member (28) is formed with one or more wall edges which are of substantially uniform thickness and which are adapted to be engaged by flat surfaces (52, 54) on the cover (14).     Abstract: A vehicle horn system (10) is disclosed which provides a plurality of different sounds, each indicative of the occurence of a different event. The horn system includes a vehicle horn (14), a horn switch (24), and a control circuit (12) having a plurality of inputs, one of which is coupled to the horn switch (24). Activation of the horn switch (24) causes the control circuit (12) to operate the horn (14) to produce a standard horn warning. Other events for which the horn system produces an audible alert include backing-up of the vehicle and changes in the vehicle alarm status. The horn system can include a vehicle alarm sensor (24) and a second vehicle horn (16) that produces a different sound than the first horn (14).
