Abstract: A circuit breaker having a current transformer for powering trip unit electronics and sensing low and high currents includes a core with solid and gapped laminations. The breaker includes an adjustment assembly for translating dial settings to tripping levels stored in memory. A temperature compensation algorithm adjusts trip points in response to temperature variations. A redundant trip activation scheme requires at least one pre-trip condition to be satisfied before the trip solenoid is activated. A supply voltage regulation system includes a stored energy circuit. A reconfigurable microcontroller executes a time-synchronized trip algorithm. The breaker trips according to a trip curve split into three protection regions. Software for detecting whether primary current exceeds each region are run in parallel or simultaneously, providing redundant instantaneous trip detection. A calibration method utilizes a signal chain that includes a current transformer, a burden resistor, a stored energy circuit and a controller.

Abstract: A system for testing an arcing fault detection system including a sensor (21a) coupled to the line conductor for monitoring the electrical signal and generating a sensor signal representing the electrical signal. The sensor simultaneously monitors the test signal and the electrical signal when the test signal is present on the test line. The arcing fault detection system generates an arc-indicative signal in response to the sensor signal associated with either the test line or line conductor having characteristics indicative of an arcing fault. A diagnostic test integrator evaluates the status conditions of the test signal and the arc-indicative signal and generates a trip signal to trigger the interruption of the electrical signal in response to certain status conditions of the test signal and the arc-indicative signal.

Abstract: A system for testing an arcing fault detection system in an electrical distribution network having a line conductor carrying an electrical signal between a power source and a load, the arcing fault detection system including a sensor coupled to the line conductor for monitoring the electrical signal and generating a sensor signal representing the electrical signal, the arcing fault detection system generating and arc-indicative signal in response to the sensor signal having characteristics indicative of an arcing fault. The testing system couples the sensor to a test line simultaneously with the line conductor and periodically produces a test signal on the test line. The sensor simultaneously monitors the test signal and the electrical signal and produces a sensor signal representing both the test signal and the electrical signal when the test signal is present on the test line. The arcing fault detection system generates an arc-indicative signal in response to the sensor signal associated with either the test line or line conductor having characteristics indicative of an arcing fault. A diagnostic test integrator evaluates the status conditions of the test signal and the arc-indicative signal and generates a trip signal to trigger the interruption of the electrical signal in response to certain status conditions of the test signal and the arc-indicative signal.

Abstract: An arrangement for reducing pressure inside a circuit breaker caused by gas produced during an electrical interruption event, including a base, an interrupter assembly, and a trip unit base. A structure having a surface is positioned i n the base at an angle relative to a vent opening of the interrupter assembly. The trip unit base includes a complementary structure opposing the structure to form a cavity. The base includes a chamber area adjacent to an opening of a vent chute that leads aw ay from the circuit breaker. During an electrical interruption event, hot explosive gas, carbon, and molten metal debris are directed away from the vent opening of the interrupter assembly along the angled surface of the structure and toward the opening of the vent chute. In this manner, pressure in the circuit breaker is reduced during an electrical interruption event, and undesirable buildup of debris is reduced.

Abstract: A modular energy management circuit breaker (EMCB) system is adapted for installation with existing panelboards. It comprises a bus way (37) that includes a connector (34) that is coupled to an inter- face module connector (24). The interface module (24), which extends across the panelboard, makes connection with the power bus and is connected to the panelboard by snap-in means. A control module is adapted to interengage with another connector in the interface module and to control a plurality of EMCBs (32). A bus way includes a plural- ity of connectors adjacent a plurality of circuit breaker positions which are connected to suitable circuits in the control module for con- trolling the drivers for the EMCBs. A terminal box (30) is formed at the end of the control module and has provision for connecting a plu- rality of control wires to suitable terminating devices for interfacing external controlling devices to the control module. The bus way is sup- ported adjacent the panelboard solely by means of the connectors con- necting it to the interface module and to one or more EMCBs. All wir- ing to the energy management system is via printed circuit boards in the modules and interconnecting connectors.

Abstract: An electrical convenience center mounting system includes an open rigid frame attachable to a support member in a wall. A ribbon cable containing a plurality of power and control wires is electrically terminated by a branch tap having a flat surface containing a plurality of socket terminals. The system further includes a plurality of plug-in control modules, connectible to and supportable on the branch tap, and duplex outlet receptacle module mountable to a rigid frame support member, that is mounted to the wall support member for supporting the branch tap and attached modules. An open box support type support frame is also disclosed with the branch tap and box support cooperating to position the branch tap partially within the box support A cover plate that completely overlies the surface of the convenience center includes apertures for enabling plug-in connections to the receptacle module. The cover plate may be opaque or transparent to enable decorator patterns to be inserted between the transparent cover plate and the convenience center surface.
