    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an enhanced system and method by which additional error retrieval capability can be provided almost without an overhead. SOLUTION: A column parity check symbol in generated by using a symbol from a selected column in an interleave type code word. The width of each column parity check symbol in decreased and the decreased column parity check symbols are unified to generate a unified column parity check symbol. The Reed Solomon encoding algorithm in applied to the unified column parity check symbol to generate an error location retrieval check symbol, which is combined with the decreased column parity check symbol to generate an error location retrieval code word. The error location retrieval check symbol is stored in a memory with the interleave type code word.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technology for an interleave type error correcting code having a selective variable redundancy. SOLUTION: In this system and method, an extended type detecting signal is generated by the processing of Reed-Solomon operation regarding unassigned inspecting symbol which is not forming a part of an interleave type coding word. After decoding the coding word and identifying the uncorrectable errors in decoding, the detecting signal is decoded so as to recover the unassigned detecting signal corresponding with the coding word being uncorrectable at the previous time. The recovered unassigned detecting signal is added to the coding word being un-correctable at the previous time so as to enhance the error correcting ability. Then the coding word is decoded, that word is un- correctable before getting the recovered unassigned detecting signal, and also the errors in the decoded word are corrected.

The width of each column parity check symbol is reduced, followed by the reduced column parity check symbols being merged to create merged column check symbols. A Reed-Solomon encoding algorithm is performed on the merged column check symbols to generate error locating check symbols which are combined with the reduced column parity check symbols to create an error locating code word. The error locating check symbols are stored with the interleaved code words in memory.
