Abstract: The chair has various lifting devices which are operated by a lever (11) for adjusting the back rest, seat and foot rest, for example, and can be fixed in position. The seat (1) has a pivot point (5) some way from a lifting device which is supported by the foot (10) and can be locked. Another lifting device is positioned on the back-rest (4). The lifting devices (3, 7) are supported by a pivot point (7) on an axis in the foot (10). A foot rest may be hinged to the seat (1). The operating lever (11) is connected by a Bowden wire to releases (13) for the lifting devices (3, 6).

Abstract: The bumper skirt for high clearance lorries can be fitted on the vehicle front or rear and is held on a toggle lever (22). Between this lever and the vehicle chassis is a shock absorber (5) consisting of a damper rod (1) at one end of a pressure tube (7), while a piston rod (2) fits into the damper rod inside the pressure tube. A spring-loaded latch hood (3) engages a catch shell (4) in the pressure tube base so that, when the latch is freed the pressure in the tube swings the skirt upwards to allow access to the underside of the vehicle. The skirt protects the vehicle against vehicles running underneath while the shock absorber minimises damage to the skirt.

Abstract: A shock absorber comprises a cylinder and a piston rod passing through at least one end of the cylinder. A piston unit is mounted on the piston rod and divides the cavity within the cylinder into two working chambers. A damping fluid is contained within the cylinder. The working chambers are interconnected across the piston unit by first and second branch flow passages arranged in parallel. First and second flow valves are associated with these first and second flow passages, respectively, and operate to dampen movement of the piston rod in at least one direction in dependency on the velocity of movement. The first branch passage flow valve is normally open and closes only when a predetermined velocity of movement is exceeded. The second branch passage flow valve is normally closed and opens only when the pressure differential between the working chambers exceeds a predetermined value. Closing of the first branch passage flow valve increases the damping effect. Opening of the second branch passage flow valve, which preferably occurs approximately at the same rod speed that the first valve closes, provides a further gradual increase in damping force upon further increase in rod velocity.

Abstract: In the illustrative embodiments of the invention disclosed, the piston unit of a gas spring incorporates a meander-shaped fluid passage for interconnecting the working chambers on either side of the piston unit so as to dampen movement of the piston rod relative to the cylinder. The meander-shaped passages may be constituted by a sequence of passage sections arranged at right angles to one another and, in one embodiment, are formed in the end faces of the piston member so as to lie in planes transverse to the axis of the cylinder. If desired, additional fluid passage units may be connected in series to provide an enhanced damping effect.

Abstract: The gas spring has insertion protection during pressure loss. It consists of a cylinder, which has a high pressure gas filling. A piston rod is guided at one end of the cylinder and is sealed and forms the displacement body in the cylinder. A braking-or blocking device acts on the piston rod when there is pressure loss in the inside of the gas spring. This braking or blocking device is arranged between the gas chambers (13, 14) in the cylinder which are extremally sealed and under the filling pressure. Specif. the braking-or blocking device is formed by an axially movable dividing wall (6) between the gas chambers (13, 14) on both sides thus dividing wall (6) is under the action of spring elements.

Abstract: In the illustrative embodiments of the invention described, a main gas spring unit used to raise and lower a movable leg rest member of a bed construction includes a further gas spring device axially connected end-to-end to the main gas spring unit. The addition of the gas spring device allows the leg rest member to be raised, with only a small manual effort, to a higher level than is possible with the main gas spring unit alone. Preferably the internal force exerted on the piston rod of the main gas spring unit is greater than the internal force exerted on the piston rod of the gas spring device. The cylinder members of the main gas spring unit and the gas spring device may be formed by a common tubular member, with the two units being separated by a common movable wall. Alternatively, the cylinder members can be separate self-contained members that are rigidly attached at adjoining end walls thereof.
