Abstract: The degree of unsaturation present in homo- and co-polymers of hydrocarbon monomers containing more than one double bond is decreased by subjecting the polymer, in the absence of any monomer, to the action of an "active Ziegler catalyst." The action is preferably effected in a hydrocarbon or halogenated hydrocarbon solvent or diluent, at a temperature greater than 60 DEG C. for more than 2 minutes. By "Ziegler catalyst" is meant a catalyst formed by mixing at least one compound of a metal belonging to Group IV to VIII of the Mendel aeff Periodic Table with a metal, alloy, hydride, or organometallic compound of a metal of Group I to III. By "active Ziegler catalyst" is meant a catalyst which in the presence of a monomer causes a rise in temperature under adiabatic conditions. The polymers treated may be made by any process e.g. with Ziegler catalysts, metal oxides, or peroxides. The polymers treated may be mixtures, e.g. a mix of polybutadiene and an ethylene-propylene co-polymer. The polymers treated may be polybutadiene, polyisoprene, a copolymer of ethylene and propadiene, a copolymer of ethylene and hexadiene 1-5, or a copolymer of ethylene and butadiene.
