Abstract: The invention concerns the preparation of white polyamides of high molecular weight based substantially on 1,4-diaminobutane and adipic acid. They are prepared by subjecting prepolymers, which contain less than 0.20 mgeq/g of cyclic [pyrrolidinyl] end groups and which have been prepared using an excess of the diamine, to aftercondensation in the solid phase in an atmosphere containing water vapour. The presence of water vapour is essential to prevent discoloration. The polyamides thus obtained can be used as engineering plastic or for the production of fibers.
