A process for purifying melamine obtained by heating urea and/or a thermal decomposition product thereof in the presence of ammonia and a catalyst and absorption of the gaseous reaction mixture in water, and filtering the solution to remove impurities and crystallizing melamine from the mother liquor; comprises dissolving the crude melamine in water at a temperature not greater than 110‹ C. (under pressure where necessary) filtering the solution thereby obtained at a temperature not greater than 110‹ C. and at a pH value between 6 and 8, and separating melamine from the filtrate by crystallization.
