Abstract: In a process for the preparation of acrolein or methacrolein by reacting in gaseous phase and at elevated temperature propylene, or isobutylene with oxygen there is used a catalyst comprising Bi, Cr and V or Bi, Cr, V and P in the form of an oxide or oxides wherein more than 1 gm. atom of Bi and Cr is present per 3 gm. atoms of V and more than 1 gm. atom of Bi and Cr is present in addition per gm. atom of P present (if any). The preparation may be effected in a fixed or fluidized bed. Typical reaction conditions are:-Temp. 300 DEG to 800 DEG C., G.H.S.V. 100 to 10,000 v./v./hr., alkene/air 0.05 to 1/1. Examples are given.ALSO:An oxidation catalyst comprises Bi, Cr and V oxides or of Bi, Cr, V and P oxides in which more than 1 gm. atom of Bi and Cr is present per 3 gm. atoms of V and more than 1gm. atom of Bi and Cr is present in addition per gm. atom of P (if any). The catalyst may be supported on silica gel, carborundum, clay, pumice, aluminium phosphate, Al2O3 or BPO4, and used as a fixed or fluidized bed.
