Abstract: Trialkyl aluminium compounds are prepared by passing a liquid containing a dialkyl aluminium hydride downwardly through a reactor column provided with internal obstructions in contact with a gaseous olefin which is caused to flow upwardly through the reactor, a gaseous phase being discharged above the outlet for the liquid phase. By discharging the gas phase at or near the top of the reactor less than 10% of the gas discharged consists of the olefin. The downflowing liquid takes up the amount of olefin necessary for the formation of the trialkyl aluminium compound and in addition some of the olefin dissolves in the liquid. On passing the liquid phase to a zone of reduced pressure the dissolved (unreacted) olefin is liberated and may be recycled. If desired the olefin may be diluted with a gas inert to the reaction, e.g. hydrogen. Specifications 770,707 and 836,792 are referred to.
