    Abstract: 1,126,853. Sulphuric esters of 3-nitro-2- chloro - 2 - hydroxy - aza - cycloalkane - 1- carbochlorides; α - nitro - # - lactams. STAMICARBON N.V. 14 Feb., 1966 [16 Feb., 1965], No. 6433/66. Heading C2C. α-Nitro-#-lactams are prepared by reacting the novel sulphuric esters of a 3-nitro-2-chloro- 2 - hydroxy - aza - cycloalkane - 1 - carbochloride with free sulphur trioxide, and hydrolysing the product obtained. The reaction may be carried out in the presence of a solvent, e.g. liquid sulphur dioxide. The hydrolysis is suitably carried out at a low temperature, for example using ice or ice-water. The novel sulphuric ester of a 3-nitro-2- chloro - 2 - hydroxy - aza - cycloalkane - 1- carbochloride may be prepared by reaction of a 2 - chloro - azacyclo - 2,3 - alkene - 1 - carbochloride with a nitrating agent which contains sulphate or pyrosulphate ions, for example a mixture of nitric acid and sulphuric acid and/or sulphur trioxide. 3 - Nitro - azacycloalkane - 2 - one - 1 - carbochlorides are formed as a by-product of the reaction above and may be hydrolysed to form α-nitro- #-lactams. The example describes the preparation of the novel sulphuric ester of a cycloheptane derivative and its subsequent reaction to form α-nitro- #-caprolactam and 3-nitro-azacycloheptane-2- one-1-carbochloride.

Polyhydric alkanols are esterified with nitric acid by reacting with a nitrating acid in a liquid sulphur dioxide medium. Glycerol di- and trinitrates, ethylene glycol dinitrate and diethylene glycol dinitrate are specified and the nitrating acid is a mixture of nitric and sulphuric acid or anhydride with a preferred nitric acid content of 38-43 mol. per cent. The autogenous oxidation of liquid sulphur dioxide removes the heat generated during esterification.
