Abstract: In a process for treating 2-(beta-cyanoethyl)-cyclohexanones with a dehydrogenation catalyst to produce the corresponding quinolines, the improvement comprising passing the 2-(beta-cyanoethyl)-cyclohexanone over a dehydrogenation catalyst at temperatures below 230 DEG C and thereafter contacting the resulting reaction product, in the gaseous state and in the presence of hydrogen, at a temperature of over 230 DEG C.

Abstract: Coumarin, a useful flavoring agent resembling vanilla beans, is produced by contacting dihydrocoumarin with a small quantity of a dehydrogenation catalyst such as palladium or platinum at elevated temperatures, optionally in the presence of oxygen. The alkylated dihydrocoumarin compounds may also be processed according to the disclosed procedure to produce the corresponding alkyl substituted products.

The term "macroporous ion exchanger" is hereby defined as an ion exchanger which consists of sulphonated copolymer of styrene with from 15 to 20% by weight of divinyl benzene having pores whose average size exceeds 100 in diameter and/or with an internal surface area larger than 30 m 2 per gram.

Abstract: Beta-mercaptropropionitrile is prepared by reacting acrylonitrile with liquid hydrogen sulphide in the presence of an organic base as catalyst. Suitable bases are aliphatic amines such as di- or triethylamine; diamines such as tetramethylene diamine; piperidine and quaternary ammonium bases such as trimethyl benzyl ammonium hydroxide. Preferably, 5-15 moles of H2S per mole of acrylonitrile are used in the reaction, which is suitably carried out at - 10 DEG to 50 DEG C. under 5-25 atm. pressure. The reaction may be carried out in a hydrocarbon solvent such as benzene or toluene or in an alcohol such as ethanol. After the reaction, the excess H2S can be removed by evaporation and the catalyst deactivated by acidification, but it is preferable to acidify before removal of the H\2S to prevent polymerization of the product.

Beta-mercaptopropionic acid is prepared by reacting acrylic acid with liquid H 2 S in the presence of a free organic base. The amount of base used is preferably 1À01-1À1 times the amount of base equivalent of the acrylic acid and suitable bases are amines, e.g. di- or triethylamine, diamines such as tetramethylenediamine; piperidine and quaternary ammonium bases. 1À5-10 moles of H 2 S is preferably used for each mole of acrylic acid. Reaction conditions are preferably from -10 to 50 C. at 5-25 atms. pressure. After the reaction has stopped, the excess H 2 S may be removed by evaporation and the product, after acidification, separated e.g. by distillation or extraction. Dithiodipropionic acid is formed as a by-product and can be hydrogenated in the presence of a catalyst such as rhenium sulphide or selenide to yield beta-mercaptopropionic acid.

Abstract: The novel compound 7-chloro-4-thia-oenanthic acid and its nitrile, esters and salts are prepared by reacting beta-mercapto-propionic acid or its nitrile, esters or salts with allyl chloride in the presence of a solvent under U.V. irradiation. The nitrile, esters and salts so prepared may be converted to the free acid by known means. The reaction may be carried out in the presence of an inert gas such as hydrogen or nitrogen. Using beta-mercapto-propionic acid as starting material and an alcohol as solvent, some ester may be formed. The novel acid product may be recovered by known techniques, e.g. distillation. The 7-chloro-4-thia-oenanthic acid may be converted to the ammonium salt of 7-amino-4-thia-oenanthic acid by reacting with ammonia.

Abstract: A process for dehydrogenating hexahydrocoumarin or alkylated derivatives thereof is disclosed, wherein the selection of specific process conditions allows substantial amounts of coumarin or alkylated derivatives thereof to be produced along with dihydrocoumarin or alkylated derivatives thereof. The hexahydrocoumarin or derivatives are contacted with the catalyst at about the dehydrogenation temperature and then are dehydrogenated in the presence of a Group VIII metal dehydrogenation catalyst in the liquid phase at a temperature of 200 DEG -375 DEG C while removing hydrogen from the reaction zone, and the reaction product contains coumarin or alkylated derivatives thereof in a molar ratio of coumarin compounds:dihydrocoumarin compounds of at least 1:5.
