Abstract: 1349638 Preparation of hexahydrocoumarin STAMICARBON BV 27 Feb 1973 [2 March 1972] 9586/73 Heading C2C 3,4,5,6,7,8 - Hexahydrocoumarin is prepared by lactonization of 2, (beta-carboxyethyl)-cyclohexanone by heating on a reaction zone to a temperature of 140-245‹ C. at 6-200 mm. mercury pressure in the presence of a catalytic quantity of a strong acid with an atmospheric boiling point above 200‹ C., and hexahydrocoumarin recovered from the vapour thus formed, e.g. by adjusting the temperature of the vapour to between the boiling point of water and hexahydrocoumarin to form a condensate or by condensing the vapour formed at a temperature below 30‹ C. with the formalin of a two-liquid layer system and separating off the aqueous upper layer.
