    Abstract: A fuel injection pump for an internal combustion engine having an engine speed responsive governor for adjusting the metering valve of the pump. In order to control the idle speed of the engine under varying temperature conditions a bimetal spring is interposed between the governor and the idle spring. The governor spring assembly includes a preloaded compression spring which prevents the governor from controlling the metering valve above the idle speed range until a predetermined speed is reached.

    Abstract: A liquid fuel injection pump for supplying timed charges of fuel to an engine by timed pumping strokes includes an adjustable timing mechanism for changing the timing of the pumping strokes. The timing mechanism includes an advance piston which is variably positionable in response to two different hydraulic control pressures. A speed related control pressure operates a servo mechanism associated with the advance piston to provide a component of speed advance. The reference position of a servo spring associated with the servo mechanism is varied by the second control pressure acting against a piston which mounts the spring and which is biased to a position of relatively advanced timing, thereby to add a component of advance which modifies or supplements the speed advance. The second control pressure is correlated with engine load and/or acceleration and in one embodiment is derived from the positioning of the fuel metering means and in another embodiment is derived from the intake manifold air pressure such as that from a turbocharged engine so that the timing is relatively advanced at low loads and during acceleration, and is relatively retarded at higher loads. A gate controlled by the position of a fuel limiting plunger coacts with the advance piston's servo mechanism to prevent advance of the advance piston during engine cranking, and maximum fuel delivery per pumping stroke is controlled according to intake manifold air pressure.

    Abstract: A fuel injection pump having a mechanically adjustable servo valve for controlling the timing of the pumping event is disclosed. A pivoted lever has one end which engages the spring seat of a timing control plunger servo valve which is also subjected to a speed related hydraulic signal and another end in the form of a bimetal strip which engages a cam clamped on the throttle shaft to pivot the lever according to the rotational position of the shaft. The profile of the cam is such as to retard the timing of the pumping stroke when the charge delivered by the pump is increased to delay pressure built up in the pump so that injection pressure in the associated nozzle is reached at a scheduled crankshaft angle regardless of variations in speed and load on the engine. A heater for the bimetal strip is provided to shift the servo spring seat to change the timing of injection upon demand or automatically under a prescribed engine operation condition. In one embodiment, the bimetal provides 3 DEG -4 DEG more advance when the engine is cold to compensate for the delayed ignition of the fuel.
