Abstract: 760,470. Jet-propulsion plant. STANDARD OIL CO. Dec. 11, 1952, No. 31462/52. Drawings to Specification. Class 110 (3). A reaction propulsion method, e.g. for the generation of hot gases in a rocket motor, comprises injecting separately and simultaneously into a combustion chamber a hypergolic fuel consisting of an organic trithiophosphite having the formula RR 1 R 11 S 3 P, wherein P is phosphorus, S is sulphur and R, R 1 and R 11 represent the same or different hydrocarbon radicals selected from alkyl radicals containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms, unsaturated aliphatic radicals containing 2 to 8 carbon atoms, cycloalkyl radicals containing 3 to 8 carbon atoms, and the aromatic radicals phenyl, tolyl, xylyl, ethylphenyl and vinyl phenyl and a nitric acid oxidizer which contains not more than 20 per cent by weight of non-acidic materials. The hypergolic fuel may be a mixture of trialkyl trithiophosphites which contain methyl, ethyl, propyl and butyl radicals or mixtures thereof and in which the methyl and ethyl groups are predominant and may contain a non-hypergolic constituent, e.g. a hydrocarbon (mixed petroleum distillate) boiling below 600‹ F. The oxidizer may be fuming nitric acid to which nitrogen tetroxide may be added, or a nitric acid-oleum mixture.
