    Abstract: A method for oxidixing di-or trimethy lvbenxenes with molecular oxyqen to benzene di-or tricarboxylic acid under liquid qhase conditions at 130≦̸C-257≦̸C. The catalyst sys- tem consisted of a source of bromine with manganese or cobalt and manganess and zirconium. catalyst contains for each gram mole of such methylbenxene 2-5 milligram atoms of the transition metal such as manganese or cobalt manganese, or 2-10 mmg atoms of bromine and based on each mmg atom of such transition metal from 0.1-3.0 mmg atom of zirconium.
