The invention relates to an improvement in the process of producing an over-based alkaline earth metal sulphonate comprising reacting a preferentially oil-soluble sulphonic acid with an excess of a basic alkaline earth metal compound, preferably a basic magnesium compound e.g. oxide in the presence of an alkanol and having from 1-3 carbon atoms passing carbon dioxide through the reaction mixture whereby the over-basing is carried out in the presence of an amine preferably in an amount from 0.05 to about 10% by weight of the basic alkaline earth metal compound. In an example to polypropylene alkylated benzene sulphonic acid were added xylene, magnesium oxide and methanol and the neutral magnesium sulphonate obtained was mixed with ethylene diamine, magnesium oxide and water and the mixture blown with carbon dioxide. After removal of methanol by heating, water was added and after heating more water was added and the mixture blown with carbon dioxide. The mixture was heated to remove water and xylene and filtered to give the sulphonate. Other examples are given.
