Abstract: A process for the recovery of the un-reacted ammonia from a reactor waste obtained from a reaction zone used for the production of acrylonitrile or methacrylonitrile contains quenching of the reactor waste with a dilute ammonium phosphate solution; in this solution, ratio of the ammonium ions to phosphate ions are between 0.7 and 1.3 and preferably between 0.9 and 1.2.
