Abstract:
An apparatus operable on a seven conductor wireline logging cable for drilling a hole in the sidewall of a drill hole which comprises an elongated housing (11) with a hydraulically operated backup shoe (20) mounted within the housing for wedging the housing at a selected location in the drill hole and a hydraulic motor (32) with a drilling bit (31) connected thereto for rotation by the hydraulic motor. Hydraulic means (34, 35) are mounted within the housing and are connected to the hydraulic motor for moving the bit into drilling engagement with the sidewall of the drill hole. In one embodiment, a core cutting bit is connected to the motor for obtaining a sample of a subterranean formation at the selected location. A control and hydraulic supply system is provided at the surface for operating the apparatus. A method of sidewall coring is also disclosed.

In the improvement of this invention, the hydraulic motor has guide track means (52) to provide positive engagement of the vanes (54) of the rotor (47) with the periphery of the hydraulic motor's rotor cavity and the rotor has conduit means (62) for the communication of fluid between the rear portion of the vanes contacting the periphery of the rotor cavity, during the rotation of the rotor and the rear portion of the vanes within the rotor. A method of sidewall coring with the apparatus is also disclosed.
