Abstract: 1,176,222. Preparation of amino carboxylic acid salts. STANDARD OIL CO. 5 Jan., 1967 [24 Jan., 1966], No. 724/67. Heading C2C. An amino acid salt is obtained by partially hydrolysing at 50-120‹ C. a mixture of water and substantially equivalent amounts of (a) an aminonitrile which is nitrilotriacetonitrile, ethylenediamine tetraacetonitrile, diethylenetriamine pentaacetonitrile or methylamine or ethylamine diacetonitrile and (b) an alkali metal hydroxide and spray drying the resultant mixture at 200-900‹ F. The partial hydrolysis step is suitably effected for at least 1 minute and ammonia formed during the reaction is preferably removed, e.g. by inert gas or thin film reduced pressure stripping. The starting materials are preferably freed from impurities before reaction and the products of the process may be converted to the corresponding acids by conventional procedures.
