Abstract: A cable insulating composition comprises a mineral oil of the type used for cable insulating oils and between 5 and 50 per cent. by weight of rosin which has been purified by dissolving it in a hydrocarbon solvent, treating the solution with an absorbent comprising silicious earth such as Fuller's earth, Florida earth, Montmorillonite, silica gel or adsorbent, preferably activated carbon such as activated charcoal and recovering the purified rosin from the solvent. The rosin may be dissolved in paraffinic or naphthenic hydrocarbons, aromatic solvents or terpenes, and the treatment may be by agitating the liquid with the adsorbent, or by percolating it through the latter. Desorption of the rosin from the adsorbent may be assisted by washing the adsorbent after treatment with a solvent, which may or may not be the same as that originally used to dissolve the rosin. In an example, Portuguese rosin (colour K) is dissolved in a petroleum fraction boiling between 60 DEG C. and 80 DEG C., and the solution percolated through a column of activated animal charcoal. After washing the column through with an equal volume of solvent, the rosin is desorbed by elution with pure benzene, which on evaporation gives a pale yellow crystalline product of colour X. Comparative figures for the power factor of this product and of the untreated and conventionally purified rosin when dissolved in a clay-treated bright paraffinic stock are given.

Abstract: A process for the preparation of improved cable insulating oils comprises dissolving a rosin in a mineral oil of viscosity between that of spindle oil and heavy motor oil, and thereafter treating the solution at temperatures between 50 DEG C. and 250 DEG C., preferably between 50 DEG C. and 150 DEG C., with up to 30 per cent., preferably between 0.5 per cent and 20 per cent. by weight of the rosin, of an adsorbent, the said adsorbent being thereafter separated from the solution. The adsorbent may be alumina, silica gel, activated charcoal, or a siliceous earth such as Fullers earth or Montmorillonite. The rosin may be a refined wood or gum rosin; a preferred rosin is that known by the R.T.M. "Polypale". The rosin may be dissolved in the oil in an amount less than 40 per cent., preferably between 5 per cent. and 30 per cent by weight of the solution and treated with the adsorbent by percolation or p agitation. The treatment may be performed in the presence of an oxidation inhibitor as described in Specification 691,691.

Abstract: An insulating oil composition comprises a mineral lubricating oil of the type used for insulating oils and a minor proportion of a rosin purified by extracting said rosin with a mainly paraffinic solvent, said solvent containing less than 10 per cent., preferably less than 5 per cent., and particularly less than 1 per cent., by weight of aromatics. The solvent may be a hydrocarbon fraction derived from mineral oil boiling in the gasoline range, preferably below 100 DEG C. Acid treated petroleum fractions boiling between 40 DEG C. and 60 DEG C. or between 60 DEG C. and 100 DEG C. may be used. The rosin may be agitated with less than 500 per cent., preferably less than 300 per cent., of the solvent based on the weight of crude rosin, and the extract separated from precipitated material and evaporated. The rosin may then be dissolved in the lubricating oil in an amount less than 50 per cent., preferably less than 30 per cent., of the weight of the oil.
