[Also in Divisions B2, F2 and H5] Apparatus for applying a plastics element to a localized area of a workpiece, e.g. a bolt, comprises a holder to grip the workpiece so that the area is exposed to induction heating means for heating the exposed surface area, a punch member and means for moving it from an inoperative position to an operative position to an inoperative position where it engages the workpiece, an indexing mechanism for feeding plastics ribbon between the punch and workpiece, air jet means for cooling the workpiece and punch in its operative position and induction heating means for heating the punch in its inoperative position. As shown, workpiece holders H 1 , H 2 are mounted on a table T which is moved by a cylinder C and are independently moved by cylinders C 1 , C 2 in a direction perpendicular to this so that the workpiece W can be positioned under heating means HC, or HC 2 respectively. The workpiece holder is first moved under the heating means and then the table is moved to position the heated workpiece under the punch P. The jaws 23, 24 of the workpiece holder are arranged so that the jaw 24 is resiliently urged towards the jaw 23 to allow positioning of the bolt in the jaws as spring loaded stop 46 also being provided to axially fix the position of the bolt to be coated. When the workpiece holder moves under the heating means a cam follower 38 causes the jaws to be locked in position and hold the bolt firmly. After heating the table is moved by cylinder C to a position under the punch P and the punch is operated by a vertical pneumatic cylinder to shear a ribbon R of plastics material and force it against the bolt W. The punch P is heated in its raised position by inductive coils containing water and is formed of a suitable alloy such that its temperature can be changed rapidly as when it has reached its operative position the workpiece and punch are subjected to air jets from nozzles (160, 161) to cool the coating material. As the workpiece holder is retracted when the punch is raised, an ejector arm 63 normally held down in a horizontal position is tripped by an arm 65 acting on a fixed stop and move upwardly and eject the coated bolt. As shown in Fig. 5, a vertically reciprocable needle 95 is moved down to penetrate the plastics ribbon R and a cylinder C4 moves the needle and hence the ribbon towards the workholder. When the feed indexing movement ceases a clamping pin 110 is moved by pneumatic cylinder C6 to hold the ribbon and punch P descends to shear the ribbon between the surface 105a and the punch P. Two work-holders and heating stations and a single punch are provided and movement is arranged so that as one is heating the other is cooling under the punch and as one is loaded the other is being unloaded. In a modification (Fig. 20) the work-holder 203 is arranged on a circular rotatable table and passes below a heating element 204 and a punch 206.
