Abstract: PURPOSE: To provide a smart pixel having electric signal processing and state setting functions by adding a prescribed electronic circuit, which is cooperated with a chiral smectic liquid crystal optical modulator, to this optical modulator on a semiconductor substrate. CONSTITUTION: Chiral smectic liquid crystal optical modulators 10 to 12 are formed on a semiconductor substrate 1, and a storage register 13 and a switch resistance network (or a digital/analog converter DAC) 14 which are cooperated with them are formed in the vicinity of them, and a liquid crystal driving signal is applied to the network 14, and these electronic circuits 13 and 14 are formed by a silicon VLSI technique. Smart pixels made locally intelligent in this manner are arranged as prescribed to form a circuit, and an input optical signal and an electric signal are inputted to this circuit, and prescribed optical logical operation or the like is performed, thereby realizing a composite of circuits in the highest level different from conventional.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To provide the so-called neural planes to be the basic elements for a neural network and parts in a parallel distribution system for processing information by a non-algorithmic method by controlling the modulators by a circuit having non-linearity at the time of its use, according to the outputs from detectors. CONSTITUTION: Two neural faces 40, 41 mutually arranged at right angles are used for a module. Each laser source L is related to each modulator M of the neural face. A polarizer 44 between each modulator M and a hologram H directs an input laser beam having a 1st polarized state to the modulator M, which directs a reflected beam rotated into a rectangularly polarized state to the hologram H. Respective modulators M of a linear array on the neural face 40 apply input vectors to beams projected from the respective light sources. A hologram array related to the neural face 41 diffracts and weight-modulate optical beams, the modulated optical beams are detected and added by respective detectors on the neural face 40, and the added beam is impressed to a threshold circuit for executing the operation of respective modulators M on the neural face 40 or inhibiting it.
