Abstract: 23,485. Stewart, W. J. Nov. 20. Points and switches for electric and other railways and tramways worked from the vehicle. Relates to improvements on the means described in Specification No. 16,667, A.D. 1900. The plunger B is carried, so that it can pass round curves, by the arms or frames A pivoted on brackets D, D on the axle-box, and a ribbed wheel G may be mounted in the frame A to run on the rail. The plunger is depressed by a weight B , or spring such as H, when it comes to the deepened part of the rail groove, but normally it is held up by a bolt J' connected to the short arm of a weighted bell crank I, which can be lifted by a cord connection K from the driver's platform. Ratchet or other holding-gear may, however, be used. The end B of the plunger may be renewable with packing-strips B to allow for wear, or it may be hinged and also provided with yielding pieces B , B' so as to give in case of obstruction. The point tongue may be held open, until the last wheel has passed, by lengthening the operating- lever and by a flange N on the tongue for the plunger to bear against during its passage. A recess o in the rail accommodates this flange.

Abstract: 25,033. Stewart, W. J. Nov. 3. Teeth, artificial.-In artificial teeth of the kind comprising a porcelain front provided with a dovetai!ed groove on each side of the longitudinal centre-line to engage corresponding lugs &c. on the backing, the grooves 4 are tapered and wedgeshaped and terminate in similarly-shaped recesses 5, forming a tapered dovetailed rib G between them. The lugs 8 on the backing 2 are shaped to fit the grooves. The upper part of the tooth 1 has an inclined shoulder 3 which is engaged by an abutment surface 7 on the backing. In a modification, the backing is in two parts, one a perforated plate 11, the other a plate 15 carrying the lugs, which pass through the openings in the plate 11. In another form, the rib 6 terminates below the plane of the surface 3, the surface 3 is cut away, and the lugs on the backing are connected at the top by a cross-piece which closes the opening at the top of the tooth. The invention may be applied to molars.

Abstract: 5560. Stewart, W. J. Oct. 7. Railways and tramways, electric ; railways and tramways, rope. - In electric or cable railways or tramways in which a conduit is used, the rail points and the conduit-slot guides for the plough or cable grip are arranged to be operated from the vehicle mechanically by a plunger entering the conduit slot or by the plough or cable grip itself. The invention is in part a development of that described in Specification No. 19,657, A.D. 1903. The rail points 6, 13, Fig. 1, are connected together and to the conduit-slot guides 12 by levers arranged as shown in Fig. 4, and one of the rail points 6 has fixed to it a rod 4, Fig. 1, working in guides 5 and adapted to be actuated by a lever 2 which normally projects into the conduit slot and is pushed aside by a plunger 22 carried by the vehicle. The parts are locked in the position into which they are moved by the plunger by the engagement of a spring- or weight-operated bolt 17, Fig. 4, with one of the slot guides 12. When the vehicle has passed the points,. the plunger 22 acts on a trigger 19, Fig. 1, and releases the bolt 17 so that the parts can resume their normal position under the influence of a weight 24, Fig. 4, and a spring 7, Fig. 1. This locking-mechanism may be dispensed with, the lever 2 being extended as shown at 36, Fig. 1, to keep the points open until all the wheels of the car have passed. The plunger 22 is mounted in a frame 27, Fig. 5, on the vehicle in such a manner that it can slide laterally to adapt itself to different positions of the conduit slot, and the frame 27 is pivoted at 25 so that the frame and plunger can be lifted by means of a cord 26 to remove the plunger from the conduit slot. The plunger may also be mounted to slide vertically and be arranged to be lifted and lowered automatically by the engagement of inclined ledges at the side of the conduit slot with a lateral projection on the plunger, which is held in its raised position by a gravity catch 38. In order to make room for the insertion or withdrawal of the plunger, automatically-operated hatches 28, Fig. 8, are arranged at suitable points of the track and are arranged to be opened by the passage of the vehicle wheels over tread pieces 34 mounted in the rail groove and connected to the hatches by levers 31 and cords 30. The inclined ledges for lifting the plunger may be continued on the undersides of the hatches. The plough in an electric railway or the cable grip in a cable railway may serve as the plunger, the plough being made with deep shoes to allow vertical adjustment without separation from the conductors.

Abstract: 19,657. Stewart, W. J. Sept. 12. Electric railways and tramways; rope railways and tramways; points and switches. - Relates to the simultaneous working of points and plough guides on electric and cable tramways or railways, and consists partly of improvements on the means described in Specifications No. 16,667, A.D. 1900, and No. 23,485, A.D. 1901. Fig. 1 shows a plan, and Fig. 2 a transverse section of the points. The pivoted curved lever A, by means of the antifriction rollers D working in the connecting-rods F, transmits movement from the point tongues 4 to the plough guides E. The point tongues 4 are provided with projections 5, which are acted on by plungers on the car. In one modified arrangement, the ends of the lever A work within sleeves which rock in the eyes of the connecting-rods F, and chains over pulleys facilitate the tilting movement of the lever A. In another arrangement, the point tongues are shifted by a pivoted curved lever as before, and they are connected to the plough guides by means of levers and connecting-rods. A rectangular frame reciprocating on supporting-rollers may be used instead of the pivoted curved lever. Fig. 8 shows an elevation of the plungers on the car, and illustrates how each is operated by a bolt J worked by a weighted lever I, each bolt being so long that, when withdrawn from the plunger B on one side, it will enter a notch in the plunger on the other side, thus preventing the fall of the plungers simultaneously. In order that the plungers may easily pass round corners, they are made to slide in grooves, as shown in Fig. 10, so as to be capable of lateral as well as vertical motion.

Abstract: 16,667. Stewart, W. J. Sept. 19. Points and switches for electric and other railways or tramways worked from the vehicle. The tongue b is pivoted to a lever e, which works in a deepened part of the rail groove c, and is knocked over by a plough carried by the vehicle. Both tongues may be similarly provided, and may be connected by the rod g. The lever is covered by hinged or other covers h, i, which are shown opened. Beyond the point, the groove is made shallower so as to lift the operating-appliance on the car. The tongues and the rail grooves may be provided with openings to pass or expel dirt &c. On the vehicle, the rod o carrying the plough v for operating the points is lowered by the lever k and a treadle or otherwise, and it can be held raised by a ratchet &c. u. Wings w on either side of the plough deflect the dirt sideways, and a roller q runs in the rail groove to lift the device when it meets the shallower portion. This appliance may be fitted on both sides and both ends of the car.
