    Abstract: A mount for an optical element such as in a laser, optical amplifier, or other optical system, is disclosed. The mount is a mounting vane for cooling the optical element by a fluid stream. The optical element may be a gain medium generating heat. The mounting vane comprises: an input section with a leading edge for meeting the fluid stream; a diffuser section which tapers to a trailing edge; and a plane section with an aperture for receiving the optical element for cooling by the fluid stream, the plane section arranged between the input section and diffuser section, wherein the diffuser section includes one or more flow guiding fins protruding from the diffuser section. The mounting vane may be stacked with a plurality of other mounting vanes in a manifold.

    Abstract: There is disclosed a displacement type Stirling cycle cryogenic cooler which has a displacer cylinder 34 extending axially between warm and cold ends 44, 42, respectively. The cooler has a regenerator 40 arranged to reciprocate axially within the displacer cylinder and to provide a heat exchanging fluid path between the warm and cold ends. The arrangement can further include a flow shaper element 70, for example an aperture, provided at the cold end of the regenerator, the flow shaper being arranged to increase forced convection in the cold end of the cylinder by shaping the flow of fluid entering the cold end of the cylinder from the regenerator. Alternatively, the arrangement can include a thermal block 68 provided at the cold end of the displacer cylinder, the thermal block having an exposed face 74 arranged to deliver heat to the operating fluid, and the exposed face is patterned to increase heat transfer from the thermal block to the operating fluid.

    Abstract: A mounting vane 100 for an optical element 125 of a laser or , optical amplifier for example, a Pockells cell, Faraday isolator or frequency conversion stage. The vane cools the optical element by a fluid stream. The optical element may be a heat generating element. The mounting vane comprises an input section 105 with a leading edge 110 for meeting the fluid stream; a diffuser section 130 which tapers to a trailing edge; and a plane section with an aperture tor receiving the optical element for cooling by the fluid stream, the plane section arranged between the input section and diffuser section. The diffuser section 130 includes one or more flow guiding fins protruding from the diffuser section. The mounting vane may be stacked with a plurality of other mounting vanes in a manifold.
