    Abstract: A surgical system, a method of operating a surgical system, and a surgical handpiece are disclosed. The surgical system (10) comprises a surgical handpiece (12) comprising a visible light emitter (14), a controller (16) configured to determine a state of the surgical handpiece and to control the visible light emitter to emit visible light based on the state of the surgical handpiece, a light sensor (18) configured to produce an output signal based on sensing the visible light, and a second surgical system (22) configured to determine an identity of the surgical handpiece based on the output signal. The surgical handpiece 12 comprises: a housing 24 having a first end 28 and a second end 30; a cable 26 adjacent to the housing, the cable having an external surface; the visible light emitter 14 disposed within the housing; and a strain relief member 32 coupled to the external surface of the cable and disposed adjacent the first end of the housing, and the strain relief member being configured to transmit visible light 20 emitted by the visible light emitter therethrough. The lumen of the strain relief member can be configured to receive the cable.

    Abstract: An assembly for milling bone includes a milling component moveably disposed in a shell between an inlet opening and an outlet opening thereof for converting bone stock into bone chips, a catch tray removably attached to the shell adjacent the outlet opening to receive the bone chips, and a base to which said shell is removably attached. The base includes a drive assembly for actuating the milling component. A sensor is attached to the base for monitoring the shell for the presence/absence of the catch tray and for generating a sensor signal that varies as a function of the presence/absence of the catch tray. A controller regulates the actuation of the drive assembly based on the sensor signal. The assembly optionally further comprises a cleaning module attachable to the base.
