Abstract: Powered patient support apparatuses-such as beds, cots, stretchers, or the like-include a plurality of user controls that allow a caregiver to control the steering and/or driving of one or more powered wheels from multiple different locations around the patient support apparatus (e.g. head end, foot end, and/or the sides). The control is carried out by force sensors that detect both an orientation of the applied forces and a magnitude of the applied forces. Translational and/or rotational movement is effectuated, depending upon the magnitude and direction of the forces, as well as the physical location of the applied force relative to a reference point on the support apparatus, such as the center. One or more object sensors may also be included in the support apparatus to assist in steering and/or navigating.

Abstract: The present invention provides a patient support that can be configured in an expanded configuration, for example to accommodate larger patients, and then reconfigured to a more compact configuration to ease maneuverability of the patient support through constricted passageways in a facility and/or to provide a low height patient support. Further, the present invention provides a barrier around the patient support surface which includes a panel that allows a patient to see through the barrier and which is optionally adaptable to change its transparency and/or color.

Abstract: A patient transport apparatus with a throttle arranged for rotation by a user between a maximum forward position and a maximum backward position to modulate propulsion via a wheel drive system. A biasing element urges the throttle toward a neutral position defined between the maximum forward and backward positions. A limiter restricts rotation of the throttle and includes a first surface, a second surface, and a guide arranged to abut the first surface to inhibit rotation beyond the maximum forward position and to abut the second surface to inhibit rotation beyond the maximum backward position. The guide is closer to the second surface than to the first surface in the neutral position such that rotation from the neutral position to the maximum forward position occurs along a first arc and rotation from the neutral position to the maximum backward position occurs along a second arc smaller than the first arc.

Abstract: A patient support apparatus includes a frame supported relative to a floor, the frame configured to support a deck for supporting a patient thereon, and a lift assembly for raising or lowering the frame relative to the floor. The lift assembly includes lifting legs coupled to the frame and an actuator with a body and an extendible member. The body and the extendible member define a stroke length extending along a stroke axis, with the actuator mounted in the lifting assembly between two levers.

Abstract: A medical chair includes a seat, backrest, a leg rest, and a pair or armrests. The seat is movable between a plurality of positions, including an upright position, reclined position, Trendelenburg position, and a standing position. The backrest pivots about two different pivot axes to assist the occupant from a seated to a standing position, or vice versa. A combination electric and manual brake system automatically engages prior to transitioning between the sitting and standing positions. The armrests are adjustable in height and are shaped to include different heights so as to assist the occupant in moving into and out of the chair.

Abstract: A person support apparatus includes sensors for monitoring aspects of a person positioned thereon. The outputs from the sensors are used to distinguish between new and prior occupants of the support apparatus, automatically zero an integrated scale system, distinguish between objects and humans on the support apparatus, determine if a person is sleeping or awake, monitor and characterize movement levels of the person, record a log of likely events regarding a support surface of the apparatus, propose identifications of objects added to or removed from the support surface, record force outputs, and/or other purposes. A person's sleep state may also be obtained and forwarded to a remote location. The sleep state data may be used to mute and/or control alerts or indicators, and/or to predict when a person is going to wake up and likely exit the support apparatus.

Abstract: A sensing system for a patient support, such as a bed, cot, stretcher, or the like, provides data about the patient and/or the patient support itself. The sensing system may include a flexible sheet that houses a sensor array that detect interface pressures between the patient and the support surface on the patient support. A user interface allows a caregiver to control operational parameters of the sensor array, including alarms. A color coded map may be displayed on the user interface highlighting the patient's currently experienced interface pressures. A control system coupled to the sensor array may map the sensor outputs to the body of the patient in order to correlate the interface pressures to specific parts of the patient's body. Shear pressure may, in some embodiments, also be detected by the sensor sheet.

Abstract: A medical chair comprising a base having one wheel having a brake; and a manual braking mechanism for selectively actuating the brake at the wheel; and a control system operable to control the brake in response to a signal or lack of signal at the chair. Further, the control system includes an actuator, which is coupled to the manual braking mechanism to move the manual braking mechanism to a braking or unbraking position. For example, the actuator may comprise a solenoid, the solenoid being coupled to the manual braking mechanism.
