Abstract: The xenon lamp has a light output which remains constant for a long operating period. The wall of the bulb is not blackened as the metallic vapour or volatile substances will be adsorbed. The adsorber consists of magnetic pieces, so that only the magnet will become blackened. The magnets (8, 8') are fitted inside the bulb on the same fitting as the electrodes (9, 9'). The magnets are in the form of partially slit rings. They are located between the discharge section of an electrode inside the bulb and the end of the tube along the same axis. The volatile substances or metallic vapour are produced by the increased temperature of the electrode during the light emission of the discharge process. They will be attracted by virtue of the magnetic field and adsorbed under magnet so that these particles or substances will not be able to settle on the inside of the bulb.

Abstract: When xenon lamps are used for tests of the weathering resistance and fastness against light, it is most desirable to keep the quantity of light emitted constant. This can be done and the lamp can be made immune against temperature fluctuations by acting on the temperature dependent properties of the light reception part. The light from the lamp is received at one end (3) of a bundle (1) of fibre optical glass guides (1), each of 2-3 mm diameter, and coated by a vacuum evaporated aluminium film (2). At the exit end (4) the light is received by a silicon photocell (8) and thermistor (9) bonded to a ring (10). After amplification the signal is compared with a reference signal and a motor is actuated to adjust a voltage regulator for the xenon lamp voltage.

Abstract: A light intensity monitoring and adjusting apparatus for a light-fastness testing apparatus having a xenon lamp and a power source circuit for supplying power to the lamp. The monitoring and adjusting device has an optical fiber light guide having three bundles of optical fibers therein. One end is directed toward the xenon lamp for picking up the light emitted therefrom and the other end is connected to a light-receiving means including a plurality of three light-receiving elements, one for ultraviolet light, one for visible light, and one for infrared light. Each produces an electrical signal corresponding to the intensity of the light received. The apparatus has a source of reference voltage and a voltage comparator coupled to the source of reference voltage for comparing input voltages from the light-receiving elements with the reference voltage. A voltage adjusting means is coupled to the power source circuit for adjusting the voltage supplied to the lamp and is driven by the output of the voltage comparator to change the voltage supplied to the lamp to bring the intensity of the light produced by the lamp to a value corresponding to the light intensity value represented by the reference voltage, whereby the intensity of light in a spectrum emitted by the lamp can be kept constant for testing specimens for light-fastness under constant conditions.

Abstract: The weather resistance and solar radiation tester has a specimen rotating frame having leads extending through the shaft and a meter for indicating the amount of light received by the light receiving element. A contact is used for electrically connecting the leads to the meter, and has a rotating shaft connected to the shaft for the specimen rotating frame. Upper and lower cases surround the rotating shaft which is rotatably journalled and define two separate compartments spaced along the rotating shaft and sealed from each other. A metal ring is fixed in the bottom of each case and a lead extends from each ring out through the respective case for connection to the meter.

Abstract: An electrolysis cell (11) for actinometers used to measure light energy is subdivided into two regions by a partition (13). One of these regions is a glass tube (12) which leads downwards and in which the mercury thread (19) deposited during the electrolysis collects. At the bottom of the other region is mercury in which a platinum wire is immersed as anode. The cathode is composed of carbon, preferably in the form of a thin plate, and it contains a vertical cavity into which a second platinum wire is introduced. Said cavity contains mercury which connects the platinum wire electrically to the carbon. The electrolyte (21) used is a mercury iodide solution. The mercury produced during the electrolysis immediately drops off the carbon electrode in the form of fine particles and collects at the bottom of the tube (12). Since the mercury does not adhere for any time to the carbon and agglomerates to form fairly large particles, measurement with the electrolysis cell of the invention is very precise, even in the initial stage.

Abstract: The colour meter providing e.g. a direct reading of three, colour stimulus values includes a hollow integrating sphere (1) with a filter mirror system directing light into the sphre, and a measuring unit. A lamp (11) lenses (6, 7) a heat shield (9) and a pinhole (8) direct a beam of light into the sphere. A filter mirror assembly (13) is mounted behind the lamp to reflect light to augment the beam etc. A sample (3) is mounted to be illuminated by the light beam with reflected light passing through a port (5) in the sphere to the measuring unit (15), through a filter (17). The energising voltage of the lamp is kept constant by a control (10) with the filter mirror system and the filter assembly (17) being adjusted simultaneously to the different selected colours.

A plate (10) movable relative to the light axis contains a shaft (35) complete with a frame (5) for the test sample (9). A further support with an adjustable lens (11) and a movable optical filter (12) are mounted on the carrier (23). The optical pattern is divided into transparent and opaque areas. The light pattern is measured by the light scanner (14).
