    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce the subject inexpensive lactam excellent in activity and useful for nylon, or the like, according to a vapor-phase Beckmann rearrangement reaction by using a silicon oxide treated with a specific acidic aqueous solution. SOLUTION: A silicon oxide treated with (C) an acidic aqueous solution at pH 1-6, preferably pH 1.5-3 is used as (A) a solid catalyst when producing ε-caprolactam from (B) cyclohexanone oxime using the component A under vapor-phase reactional conditions. The above silicon oxide is preferably amorphous silica and the above acidic aqueous solution is preferably an inorganic acid, especially one kind selected from the group consisting of hydrochloric acid, hydrofluoric acid, sulfuric acid and nitric acid, especially the hydrochloric acid. The silicon oxide preferably has a vicinal silanol. The catalyst is preferably obtained by mixing, e.g. the component A with the component C, carrying out the refluxing at about 20-100 deg.C temperature for about 1-50 h, then filtering the component A, washing the resultant component A with deionized water, or the like, and drying the washed solid catalyst at about 100 deg.C for about 1-10 h.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing ε-caprolactam including a method for regenerating a catalyst capable of suppressing the deterioration of the catalyst and a reactor used for the method. SOLUTION: This method for producing ε-caprolactam from cyclohexanone oxime under a gas phase reaction condition by using a zeolite or non-zeolite substance as a catalyst comprises a process of reaction for converting cyclohexanone oxime to ε-caprolactam in the presence of the above zeolite or non-zeolite substance and a regeneration process for regenerating the above zeolite or non-zeolite substance of which activity is reduced by treating it under a non-oxidizing gas atmosphere at 100-600 deg.C.

SOLUTION: (B) A crystalline zeolite treated with (A) an acidic aqueous solution at pH 1-3 is used as a catalyst when producing ε-caprolactam from cyclohexanone oxime using the crystalline zeolite as the solid catalyst under vapor-phase reactional conditions. The component A is preferably an aqueous solution of an inorganic acid, especially at least one kind selected from the group consisting of hydrochloric acid, hydrofluoric acid, sulfuric acid and nitric acid and the hydrochloric acid is especially preferably used.
