    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To advantageously obtain the subject compound useful as a component of a liquid crystal composition by using a starting compound capable of being synthesized according to various methods. SOLUTION: (A) compound represented by the formula R -(A -Z )p -(A -Z )q -≡ [R is H, F atom, cyano, etc.; A to A are each independently a group represented by formula I, a group represented by formula II, etc.; Z and Z are each independently a single bond, C≡C, C=C, CH2 O, etc.; (p) and (q) are each 0 or 1] is reacted with (B) a compound represented by formula III [X to X are each CH, CF or N; Y and Y are each H or F atom and are not simultaneously H when (s) is 0; Y is H or F atom; (s) is 0 or 1; R is a 1-12C alkyl or a 1-12C alkoxyalkyl which may be substituted; E is a halogen, etc.] under basic conditions by using a metallic catalyst to afford a compound represented by formula IV. The components A and B are respectively obtained according to various methods and the component A is used in an equiv. amount of usually 0.9-10 times, preferably 1-2 times based on the component B.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an aromatic derivative useful for producing an intermediate for a medicine, an agrochemical, a liquid crystal, etc., especially an intermediate for a low-viscosity liquid crystal compound excellent in dielectric anisotropy. SOLUTION: This aromatic derivative is shown by formula I [R is a 1-12C alkyl, alkenyl or (substituted) benzyl; X is F; (r) is 0-3] such as 2-(4- benzyloxy-2,3-difluorophenyl)-5-(3-hydroxy-3,3,-dimethyl-1-propynyl)py rimidine. The derivative is obtained by reacting a phenylpyrimidine derivative of formula II (D is a halogen) with 1,1-dimethyl-2-propyne in the presence of a metal catalyst such as copper iodide to give an acetylene derivative of formula III and reacting the resultant substance with a basic substance such as triethylamine, etc.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain in an industrially advantageous way the subject compound useful as an intermediate for medicines/agrochemicals. SOLUTION: The objective compound, an optically active N- benzyloxycarbonylpipecolic acid, is obtained by optical resolution of (±)-N- benzyloxycarbonylpipecolic acid with, as resolution agent, an optically active aralkylamine of the formula (A is an aryl; R is an alkyl or aralkyl) (e.g. optically active α-methyl-benzylamine) in a solvent such as methanol. It is preferable that the amounts of the respective reagents be as follows: 0.5-1mol of the optically active aralkylamine per mol of the (±)-N-benzyloxycarbonylpipecolic acid and 300-5000ml of the solvent per mol of the optically active aralkyl-amine.

    Abstract: PURPOSE: To obtain the subject composition, consisting essentially of two kinds of compounds having specific structures, capable of manifesting high-speed responsiveness, low temperature dependence of τ-V characteristics and a chiral smectic C phase and useful as an optical shutter, a display element, etc. CONSTITUTION: This composition consists essentially of a compound of formula I [R11 and R12 are each a 1-20C alkyl, an alkoxy, etc.; A11 to A13 are each formula II or III [(j) is 0-3], etc., with the proviso that (p+q) is 0 or 1 and A12 and A13 are each a monocyclic ring when A11 is a condensed ring and (p+q) is 1 or 2 when A11 is a monocyclic ring and A12 and A13 are each a monocyclic ring when (p+q) is 2; Z is H or F; (n) is 0-10; (r), (s), (t) and (u) are each 0 or 1, with the proviso that the compound is a trans-olefin when (u) is 1[ and (B) a compound of formula IV [R21 is a 3-20C (un)saturated alkyl or a 3-20C (un)saturated alkoxyalkyl; A21 to A23 are each A11 ; X2 is CH=CH, CH2 -CH2 , etc.; (n) is 1-10; (m), (p) and (q) are each 0 or 1, with the proviso that the relationship among (p), (q) and A21 to A23 is the same as that among (p), (q) and A11 to A13 ].
