    Abstract: The furnace comprises a cylindrical furnace body (5), a heater (4) installed in said furnace body (5) and a muffle tube (3) installed inside said heater (4) to separate a heating atmosphere from said heater (4). The muffle tube (3, 34, 35, 36) is made of highly pure carbon and coated with a gas impermeable carbon. In particular the highly pure carbon muffle tube may be coated on the outside with a gas impermeable pyrolytic or vitreous carbon layer. The furnace prevents contamination of the preform with impurities and has a long life.

    Abstract: A heating furnace used to dehydrate, dope or sinter a glass fibre preform (1) comprises a furnace body (5), a cylindrical zone heater (4) in the furnace body (5) and a muffle tube (3) installed through the furnace body (4). A partition (23) in a portion of the muffle tube (3) projecting above the furnace body (5) divides the interior space of the muffle tube (3) into an upper space and a lower space. In use the preform, which is preferably of high purity quartz glass, is placed in the upper member (33) while partition (23) is closed, with nitrogen supplied through inlet (7), then cover (37) is closed partition (23) opened to allow the preform (1) to be lowered to a processing position in tube member (35). The member (33) may be of quartz, and further tube members (35, 36) may be of carbon coated with SiC or carbon.
