    Abstract: A planar wavelength optical circuit (1) wherein a reflection filter (4) is disposed inside a diagonal groove (3) traversing an optical waveguide (2n), reflected light reflected from the reflection filter (4) is sensed by an optical sensor (61n) of an optical sensor array (6) to monitor the intensity of a signal light. A substrate (10) of the optical circuit (1) constituting a part of the groove (3) is a glass substrate made of a glass material having an index of refraction approximately equal to that of a filter fixing resin (5) fixing a core (20) of the optical waveguide (2n) and a reflection filter (4) . As a result, reflection of light at portions of the groove (3) is prevented, and occurrence and confinement of extra scattering light inside the groove ( 3) are reduced. Therefore, an optical waveguide module leading to improvement o f the monitor characteristics of a signal light is realized.

    Abstract: An optical device (1) comprising a substrate (2) having upper surface part secured with a bare fiber (5) exposed by removing the coating (4) at the intermediate part of an optical fiber tape core (3). A transverse groove (8) is made in the substrate (2) obliquely to the axis of the bare fiber (5) suc h that the groove (8)traverses the core part (5a) of the bare fiber. An optica l member (9) for reflecting a part of signal light transmitting on the bare fiber (5) is inserted into the transverse groove (8). A supporting member (1 0) is provided above the bare fiber (5) and a photodetector (11) for detecting light reflected off the optical member (9) is provided on the supporting fac e (10a) of the supporting member (10). The supporting face (10a) of the supporting member (10) is inclining against the upper surface of the substra te (2) and thereby the light incident face (13) of each photodetector (11) inclines at a specified angle against the upper surface of the substrate (2) . An optical device in which dependency on receiving light polarization of the photodetector can be reduced is thereby realized.

    Abstract: A light source unit comprises a wide band light source 21 and an interference suppressing device 25 for suppressing interference at each wavelength. The light source may be provided in a spectrum analyzer. The interference suppressing device may reduce coherence of the respective wavelength components or may spatially limit the optical path of each wavelength. Alternatively, the interference suppressing device may comprise an optical path modulator, a phase modulator, a wavelength modulator, a polarization modulator or an intensity modulator. In the spectrum analyzer 1, light from source unit 2 irradiates light onto sample A. Detector unit 3 detects light reflected, scattered, or transmitted from the sample. The light source may generate supercontinuum light.

    Abstract: A method of producing with the collapsing process an optical fiber preform capable of forming an optical fiber in which an increment in transmission loss due to OH absorption is reduced, and an optical fiber preform and an optical fiber produced with the method. The method comprises reducing the amount of hydrogen atom-containing substances in a glass pipe, sealing one end of the glass pipe, and collapsing the glass pipe to obtain a solid body. One aspect of the method comprises heating the glass pipe at 550 DEG C or below, sealing one end of the glass pipe, and collapsing the glass pipe to obtain a solid body. The preform produced with the method has a feature in that its portion formed by the interface portion at the time of the collapsing contains OH groups at a concentration of 100 wt. ppb or below. The optical fiber produced by drawing the preform has a feature in that its OH-originated loss is less than 0.5 dB/km at a wavelength of 1.38 mu m.
