Abstract: In an optical fiber 1 having a core region 3 and a cladding region 5 which surrounds the core region 3, wherein a plurality of regions made of sub mediums 2 having refractive index different from that of the main medium 4 constituting the cladding region 5 are spaced apart in cross section of the cladding region 5 and the mean refractive index of the core region 3 is lower than that of the cladding region 5, the sub-medium regions 2 are regularly arranged in the radial direction of the optical fiber 1 such that the light having given wavelength, propagation coefficient and electric field distribution propagates along the fiber axis and has not less than 50 % of a total propagating power in the core region 3, and this arrangement does not have translational symmetry in cross section.

Abstract: In an optical fiber 1 having a core region 3 and a cladding region 5 which surrounds the core region 3, wherein a plurality of regions made of sub mediums 2 having refractive index different from that of the main medium 4 constituting the cladding region 5 are spaced apart in cross section of the cladding region 5 and the mean refractive index of the core region 3 is lower than that of the cladding region 5, the sub-medium regions 2 are regularly arranged in the radial direction of the optical fiber 1 such that the light having given wavelength, propagation coefficient and electric field distribution propagates along the fiber axis and has not less than 50 % of a total propagating power in the core region 3, and this arrangement does not have translational symmetry in cross section.

Abstract: The present invention relates to an optical transmission line, applicable to WDM transmission, having a structure for restraining optical transmission characteristics from deteriorating due to each of the occurrence of nonlinear optical phenomena and the wavelength dispersion. This optical transmission line comprises, at least, a first optical fiber having, as characteristics at the predetermined operating wavelength, a first effective area and a first dispersion slope; and a second optical fiber having, as characteristics at the predetermined operating wavelength, a second effective area smaller than the first effective area and a second dispersion slope smaller than the first dispersion slope. In particular, the second optical fiber contributes to suppressing the deterioration in its optical transmission characteristics in the whole optical transmission line.

Abstract: This invention relates to an optical transmission line having a structure that realizes excellent transmission characteristics by reducing dispersion with respect to signal light in a 1.55- mu m band. This optical transmission line includes at least one transmission unit provided between a transmitter and a receiver, between a transmitter and a repeater, between repeaters, or between a repeater and a receiver. Each transmission unit includes a dispersion-shifted optical fiber as a transmission medium and a mode removing unit for reducing the optical power of high-order modes excluding a fundamental mode of light signals propagating through the dispersion-shifted optical fiber. The dispersion-shifted optical fiber has an incident terminal on which the light signals are incident and an exit terminal from which the light signals are emitted, and has a dispersion of 5 ps/nm/km or less in terms of absolute value with respect to light having a wavelength of 1,550 nm, and a cutoff wavelength longer than the wavelength of the light signals at a fiber length of 2 m. The mode removing unit has a structure for reducing the optical power of high-order modes to 1/10 or less, preferably 1/40 or less, of the optical power of the fundamental mode so as to satisfy the single-mode condition in relation to fiber length.
