Abstract: Based on an intermediate 20 A in which a cladding portion 22 is formed on the outer periphery of a core portion 21 , a pair of holes 23 and 24 are provided parallel to the z axis on both sides of the core portion 21 within the cladding portion 22 , and an intermediate 20 is thereby fabricated. In this intermediate 20 , a width Ry in the y-axis direction is made smaller than a width Rx in the x-axis direction. Moreover, a cylindrical stress applying part 33 is inserted into a hole 23 of the intermediate 20 , and a cylindrical stress applying part 34 is inserted into a hole 24 thereof. Thus, a preform 40 is formed. These materials are drawn and integrated together, and a polarization maintaining optical fiber is thereby manufactured.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a quartz glass pipe and a method for producing an optical fiber preform to produce a quartz glass pipe having a small difference in the ratio of outside diameter to inside diameter, to produce an optical fiber preform using this quartz glass pipe and to produce an optical fiber having a small variation in zero dispersion wavelength in the lengthwise direction using this optical fiber preform and to provide an optical fiber. SOLUTION: The quartz glass pipe having a small variation in the ratio of outside diameter to inside diameter is produced by grinding the periphery of a quartz glass pipe according to its inside diameter change. A quartz glass pipe is drawn in such a way as to obtain a uniform outside diameter to produce the objective quartz glass pipe. The optical fiber preform is produced by inserting a glass rod including a core into the produced quartz glass pipe and carrying out rod-in collapse. This optical fiber preform is converted to an optical fiber to produce the objective optical fiber having ≤0.5%/10 km variation in zero dispersion wavelength in the lengthwise direction. Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a manufacturing method for a glass pipe for optical fibers, where the variation in its residual stress and its dimension can be prevented by drilling it under a constant viscosity, and to provide a manufacturing apparatus therefor. SOLUTION: The pressure generated when a glass material 37 is penetrated with a drilling jig 48 is detected by a penetrating pressure detecting means 12. The state of softening of the glass material 37 can be judged by feeding back the detection signals of the means to a controlling device 11. Namely, when the penetrating pressure is small, the heating by a heating means 31 is weakened by a controlling means 11 to lower temperature so that the material is made less soft; on the other hand, when the penetrating pressure is large, the heating by the heating means 31 is strengthened by the controlling means 11 to raise temperature so that the material is made more soft.
