    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a quartz pipe capable of forming a preform for optical fibers having excellent properties wherein quartz pipe has a through hole having an excellent axial positioning accuracy and less distribution of the outer diame ter (a rotating state of the outer surface) when piercing. SOLUTION: The method comprises a heating step for heating a desired area of a glass material containing quartz as the main component to form a softened area, a positioning step for positioning a jig for penetrating against the glass material, and a piercing step for forming a through hole in the softened area of the glass material by penetrating the jig for penetrating into the glass material in the lengthwise direction of the glass material. The state of softening of the glass material 37 can be judged by feeding back the detection signals of the means to a controlling device 11. Namely, when the penetrating pressure is small, the heating by a heating means 31 is weakened by a controlling means 11 to lower temperature so that the material is made less soft; on the other hand, when the penetrating pressure is large, the heating by the heating means 31 is strengthened by the controlling means 11 to raise temperature so that the material is made more soft.
