Abstract: An angular rate sensor comprising a pair of accelerometers that includes means for continuously nulling error signals resulting from misalignment of the accelerometers. The first accelerometer (10) has a first force sensing axis and produces a first output signal (a1) indicating acceleration along the first force sensing axis. The second accelerometer (12) has a second force sensing axis and produces a second output signal (a2) indicating acceleration along the second force sensing axis. The accelerometers are mounted by mounting means such that their force sensing axes are both parallel to a common sensing axis and such that the accelerometers can be moved along a vibration axis normal to the sensing axis. A signal generator (76) produces a periodic drive signal having a predetermined frequency, and drive means (80, 82, 84) connected to the mounting means is responsive to the drive signal for vibrating the first and second accelerometers along the vibration axis at the predetermined frequency. Signal processing means (104) receives the first and second output signals and generates a Coriolis signal representing the Coriolis acceleration along the sensing axis resulting from movement of the accelerometers along the vibration axis and rotation of the body about a rate axis normal to the vibration axis and to the sensing axis. The signal processing means includes the detection means (92) that receives the Coriolis signal and produces a feedback signal that is a function of those components of the Coriolis signal that are in phase with respect to the drive signal. The drive means includes means (80) for combining the feedback signal with the drive signal, such that the in phase components are continuously driven towards a null value.

Abstract: A system for determining angular rate of rotation of a body about a rate axis. In one arrangement, the system comprises first (10) and second (12) accelerometers, movement means and processing means. The first and second accelerometers have their sensitive axes (16, 18) parallel to a sensing axis that is in turn perpendicular to the rate axis. The first and second accelerometers are adapted to produce first and second output signals (a1, a2), each output signal having a frequency corresponding to the acceleration experienced by the respective accelerometer along its sensitive axis. The movement means includes means (68) for producing a periodic movement signal and means (14) responsive to the movement signal for periodically moving the accelerometers along a movement axis perpendicular to the rate and sensing axes, such that each output signal includes a periodic Coriolis component. The processing means includes means (75) for producing a reference signal that defines one or more first time periods during which the Coriolis components have one polarity and one or more second time periods during which the Coriolis components have the opposite polarity. The first and second time periods together span one or more complete periods of the movement signal. The processing means further comprises means (71, 72) for determining, for each output signal, a phase value representing the difference between the phase change of the output signal during the first time periods and the phase change of the output signal during the second time periods. The processing means further includes means (80) for determining from the phase values a value representing the angular rate of rotation of the body about the rate axis. In a second arrangement, a single accelerometer is periodically moved along the movement axis.

Abstract: A Coriolis rate sensor comprising first (120) and second (122) accelerometers with their force sensing axes parallel to a common sensing axis. The accelerometers (120, 122) are vibrated along arcs (16) in response to a periodic drive signal (150) at a first frequency, each arc being tangent to a vibration axis normal to the sensing axis. The accelerometer output signals (130, 132) are demodulated (104, 106) to determine angular rate, as well as to detect the phase shift between the drive signal (150) and the periodic components of the output signals (130, 132). In one arrangement, the detected phase shifts are used to drive a phase servo that tends to reduce the bias error caused by interaction between the phase shifts (160, 170) and misalignments (164, 174) of the accelerometers (120, 122) with respect to the sensing axis. In another arrangement, the phase shifts (160, 170) are used to calculate a bias term (178) for correcting the measured angular rate. A single accelerometer (14) embodiment is also described.

Abstract: TRANSLATIONAL ACCELEROMETER AND ACCELEROMETER ASSEMBLY METHOD An accelerometer comprising a body (10, 16, 12), a proof mass (18, 30, 32), mounting means comprising flexures (20, 22) for mounting the proof massto the body, and force sensing means (34, 38). The flexures permit translationalmotion of the proof mass with respect to the body along a sensitive axis SA and rotation of the proof mass with respect to the body about a hinge axis HA that is perpendicular to the sensitive axis. Acceleration of the accelerometer along thesensitive axis results in translational motion of the proof mass along the sensitive axis. The force sensing means reacts to such translational motion by producing asignal indicative of acceleration along the sensitive axis. In a preferred embodiment, the mounting means comprises a pair of fused quartz flexures that are oppositely directed with respect to one another, and the sensing means comprises a pair of vibrating beam force transducers that are connected to the proof mass on opposite sides of the binge axis from one another. The described assembly method for accelerometers comprises forming bridges between the proof mass and body, the bridges being removed after attachment of the force transducers.
