Abstract: A wireless local area network for digital radio communication between remote devices and a PBX telephone system, wherein the remote devices can access and use the voice message features in the PBX and the data bases on a host computer and servers. A wireless phone is provided for voice and data communication through the PBX or a CO telephone line with remote locations or the Internet using digital data packets and standard Internet Protocol. In a preferred embodiment ofthe invention, the remote device is a cash register comprising a bar code scanner and a phone. Ratio communication between the register and a host computer is carried out over two channels, a first channel for data communication and a second channel for voice communication.

Abstract: A self service shopping system includes electronic shelf labels 114 communicating with a central computer 110 and portable shopping terminals 116 in short range communication with the electronic shelf labels. A customer records purchases by activating the terminal in the vicinity of the shelf label. Identification data may be sent from the terminal to the shelf label to be relayed to the central computer to record a purchase. Alternatively data can be sent from the shelf label to the terminal to record a purchase. A customer service station 118 and a cashier station 120 may also be provided. The communication links may be by radio or optical means.

Abstract: The system uses electronic price tags (114) which are provided with communication modules linking them over, e.g. a wireless local network, with a central computer (110) to enable receipt of price information. A portable terminal (116) carried by a shopper receives the price information from the tags over a short-range radio link when actuated by the customer wishing to purchase an item, and stores a running total. Independent claims are included for: (a) a purchasing system employing a computer coupled to a wireless network; (b) a method of recording purchases using a self-service terminal; (c) a self-service purchasing system including a communication network with a central computer; (d) a self-service purchasing system in which a customer is associated with a purchasing terminal; (e) an electronic price tag for use in a an electronic self-service purchasing system; (f) and a system to distribute product information to a customer.
