Abstract: An apparatus and method for locating a mobile communication device 100 includes sending ultrasonic or radio frequency signals 140,141 from a plurality of fixed transmitters 116 to that device. An imaging device 117 possibly collocated with the transmitter correlates images of the user carrying the mobile device with the positional information and recognises when the signal from the transmitter is obstructed (20, fig.3). Time of arrival (TOA) or signal strength (RSSI) measurements may be used to locate the mobile device and transmit power levels or mobile device signal threshold levels may be varied; a planogram of the area may be also be used to estimate signal attenuation from obstructions to mitigate multipath effects. The locating system may periodically update to allow tracking of the mobile device.

Abstract: Eine Vorrichtung und ein Verfahren zur videounterstützten Feststellung eines mobilen Kommunikationsgeräts mit Sichtverbindung in einem Ortungssystem umfassen das Senden von Signalen von mehreren festen Sendern in der Umgebung zu einem nahegelegenen mobilen Kommunikationsgerät, um das mobile Kommunikationsgerät zu orten. Eine Bildgebungsvorrichtung beobachtet das mobile Kommunikationsgerät oder einen das mobile Kommunikationsgerät tragenden Benutzer in der Umgebung und erkennt, wenn sich das mobile Kommunikationsgerät nicht in einem Zustand mit Sichtverbindung zu mindestens einem nahegelegenen Sender befindet, wobei ein Signal von dem mindestens einen nahegelegenen Sender blockiert ist. Ein Ortungssystemparameter wird für dieses blockierte Signal derart modifiziert, dass das mobile Kommunikationsgerät unter Verwendung des modifizierten Ortungssignalparameters geortet werden kann.
