A chemical injection apparatus interfaces with the irrigation system in an automated way to control the application of fertilizers, nutrients, pesticides, plant growth regulators and modifying agents, water conditioners, soil conditioners and additives, and water. More particularly this invention teaches a method and device for remotely operating a continuously-calibrating chemical dispensing device of a chemigation unit, and the equipment associated with data acquisition, control and injection equipment.

Disclosed is a method of increasing the abiotic environmental stress tolerance of a plant; improving the quality and/or yield and/or vigour of a plant crop or reducing damage to a plant caused by one or more abiotic environmental stress factors comprising the application of at least one cyclopropene in the plant irrigation water wherein said agrochemical has a physiological effect on the plant. The preferred cyclopropene is 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) applied in the plant irrigation water to the crop at a rate of 0.1 to 50g per hectare at a concentration of 50 to 500ppm. Examples of abiotic stress are drought, flood, excessive temperature, low temperature, frost, excess sunlight, insufficient sunlight, wind, inadequate soil nutrients, excessive soil salinity, air pollution, soil pollution or water pollution, or any combination thereof. Examples of plants are soybean, maize, cotton, vegetables, banana, jatropha, ornamentals, and wheat.
