NOVEL COMPOSITIONS OF MATTER FORMED OFAMMONIUM AND NON-HEAVY METAL INORGANIC SALT AND HYDROXIDE INTERCALATES AND HEAVY METAL LAYERED CHALCOGENIDES, WHEREIN THE CHALOCOGEN IS SELECTED FROM SULFUR, SELENIUM AND/OR TELLURIUM. THE NOVEL INTERCALATED COMPOUNDS DISPLAY ADVANTAGEOUS CHARACTERISTICS WHEN UTILIZED AS SOLID LUBRICANTS, AND AS X-RAY DIFFRACTION GRATING CRYSTALS. CERTAIN OF THE INTERCALATED TRANSITION METAL CHALCOGENIDES ALSO EXHIBIT UNIQUE SUPERCONDUCTIVITY CHARACTERISTICS.
