Each of the liquid crystal light valves 104-106 has at least one polarizing plate and the transmissibity of the polarizing plates mounted on respective light valves for incident color beams is changed in accordance with the light intensity of respective color beams. The color separated beams are red, green and blue beams and the polarizing plates are color polarizing plates having color spectral characteristics. Consequently, a projected image free from color shear and excellent in color reproducibility can be obtained.
