Abstract: An apparatus and method for testing the strength of a person's muscles or muscle groups. The apparatus comprises a support frame (102) with associated elements such as a graduated guide post (104) and an adjustable support arm (106) to carry a force sensing device (110). The sensing device (110) is contacted by an area of the person's body (e.g. fist, knee, thigh) which is subjected to a force from the selected muscle or muscle group and generates an initial signal, such as an electrical voltage, in response to the force applied. The initial signal is processed and the resultant signal, representing the force applied, is displayed. The apparatus and method are well suited for testing muscle damage or recovery, for example for insurance or therapeutic purposes, and for comparing corresponding muscles, such as comparing selected muscles on the left of the body with those on the right.
