Abstract: The system includes an allocating unit which allocates the traffic of subscriber equipments having a shorter length of cable to tones starting from a higher frequency band. Interference in a lower frequency band are reduced and a better signal to noise ratio is achieved on tones above a system noise level to subscriber equipments with relatively longer lengths of cable. Preferably, the usable frequency band of the system bandwidth for subscriber equipments having relatively longer lengths of cable is determined by the noise level of the system. The allocation unit operates in accordance with a tone allocation algorithm.

Abstract: The receiver has a receiver sampling clock synchronised with a transmitter sampling clock by extracting timing data from a pilot carrier on which a known sequence of symbols is transmitted. The receiver has a control channel mechanism receiving a control channel over which data relating to changes in dynamic transmission parameters are transmitted. A correlation mechanism extracts timing data from the pilot carrier and uniquely identifies a symbol at which the change in dynamic transmission parameters is effected. The multicarrier transmission system is a discrete multitone (DMT) transmission system and a based VDSL system.

Abstract: The receiver includes a back-coupling coil which controls an oscillator device. The back coupling coil uses a back coupling signal which represents an argument value of the pilot carrier wave. The back coupling signal is obtained from an approximation of an argument for a complex number which represents the pilot carrier wave. The approximation maintains a full resolution of the complex number and the back-coupling coil controls the oscillator device so that the pilot argument tends to approach zero. The back-coupling coil compensates for channel effects. The oscillator device is a voltage controlled crystal oscillator and the multi-carrier wave transmission system is of the discrete multiple tone (MT) type or a MT-based very high bit rate digital subscriber line system.

Abstract: The modifying auxiliary device is used to modify the compensation parameters in small stages so that an equalisation auxiliary device converges in the inverted channel model. An output signal (U) from the auxiliary device is fed to a detector/quantifying auxiliary device, and an output signal (Y) from the detector/quantifying auxiliary device is fed to a first input on the modifying auxiliary device. An output signal (EQ) from the modifying auxiliary device is fed to the compensating auxiliary device. The output signal, Y, is fed to a symbol decoding auxiliary device which produces a decoded data flow. The modifying auxiliary device is operatively connected to a variance value calculating auxiliary device, which is arranged to produce a signal (W) which indicates an interference variance on each of the carrier waves in the multiple carrier wave system.

Abstract: The multicarrier transmission system transmits channel information between two transceivers using several subcarriers. Each subcarrier or symbol has a parameter associated with it. The transceivers transmit the channel information as a sequence of a number of groups. Each group contains information concerning the number of adjacent subcarriers with the same value as the parameter, together with the actual value of the parameter. The parameter has several discrete values, and is a bit loading value and a QAM constellation identifier.

Abstract: The receiver includes a digitiser which samples and quantises a received signal with several individual carriers. A processor digitally processes the sampled signal. Data modulated on the several carriers is extracted. The digitiser has an AD converter which converts the received signal to a series of digitised samples, each of which n bits. An extremal detector detects when an analogue signal at an input to the converter has an amplitude greater than the amplitude which can be represented by n bits. The generator is controlled by the extremal detector to generate m bits to represent each digitised sample, where m is greater than n.

Abstract: Each carrier wave comprises a channel, such that the number of bits per symbol, or bit loading, varies between channels and, within a channel, in time, so that each channel has an associated bit loading parameter. In operation, the multiple carrier wave transmission system is arranged synchronously to update, on the first and second transceivers, the bit loading parameters associated with each channel by transmission of data over a control channel. The control channel is established at the system start, on a predetermined channel in the multiplicity of carrier waves, whose identity is known by the first and second transceivers. The control channel, after the start, is altered from the predetermined channel to a further channel which is selected by the first transceiver on the basis of the channel characteristics.
