    Abstract: Synthesis gas was produced by partial oxidn. of a mixt. of finely divided solid fuel (coke or coal) and a heavy residual oil in slurry form in a reactor with controlled amts. of O and steam at 1345-474≦̸C and 25atm. The gas formed and residual solids and ash were sepd. by passage through a constriction and removal of a low-solids gas as a side stream from the higher flow-rate stream thus produced.

    Abstract: A continuous process for producing clean synthesis gas comprises reacting a dispersion of particulate carbon in a liq. fuel with an O2-contg. gas(air, O2-enriched or O2) in an O/C atomic ratio of 0.6-1.5, at 700-1650oC and 1-250 atm. in a free-flow unpacked gas generator(9),opt. in the presence of a temp. moderator comprising H2O, CO2, fuel gas or cooled recycled gas. The resulting effluent gas is cooled to 150-480oC (above the dew point of H2O in the gas) and particulate carbon is removed by quenching the gas in a hot immersion fluid. A part of the hot immersion fluid is cooled to 150-450oC in an external cooler and partly recycled to the quench zone.

    Abstract: A burner for producing synthesis gas, fuel gas or reducing gas from slurries of solid carbonaceous fuel and/or liquid or gaseous hydrocarbon fuel. The burner has a high turndown feature and comprises a central conduit; a central bunch of parallel tubes that extend longitudinally through said central conduit; an outer conduit coaxial with said central conduit and forming an annular passage therewith; and an annular bunch of parallel tubes that extend longitudinally through said annular passage; and wherein the downstream ends of said central and annular bunches of parallel tubes are respectively retracted upstream from the burner face a distance of about 0 to 12 i.e. 3 to 10 times the minimum diameter of the central exit orifice and the minimum width of the annular exit orifice. Three ranges of flow through the burner may be obtained by using one or both bunches of tubes and their surrounding conduits. Throughput levels may be rapidly changed-up and down-without sacrificing stable operation. Additional mixing of the reactant streams is obtained in one embodiment by providing one or more coaxial cylindrical shaped pre-mix chambers in series in the central conduit and/or one or more annular shaped pre-mix chambers in series in the annular passage.

    Abstract: Production of clean fuel gas having a high heating value by means of two interconnected free-flow noncatalytic partial oxidation gas generators. All of the particulate carbon produced in the effluent gas stream from both generators is recovered and burned as a portion of the feedstock in gas generator two to maximize the methane yield in gas generator one. At least a portion of the cooled and cleaned effluent gas from gas generator 2 is recycled to gas generator 1 as the temperature moderator. The cooled, cleaned, and purified effluent gas stream from gas generator one has a minimum heating value of 400 BTU/SCF and a minimum methane content of 5.0 mole % (dry basis).

    Abstract: 1399791 Combustible gas TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP 21 May 1973 [28 June 1972] 24024/73 Heading C5E A gas containing H 2 and CO is made by simultaneously introducing into a free-flow, unpacked, non-catalytic gas generator: (a) a liquid hydrocarbonaceous fuel containing C, H and optionally other elements, (b) a gas containing at least 22 mol. per cent CH 4 , and (c) a free-oxygen containing gas comprising 0À6 to 1À2 atoms of free oxygen per atom of combustible carbon in the fuel and methane containing gas, allowing partial oxidation to take place in the absence of externally added water and removing from the reaction zone a product gas stream comprising H 2 , CO, H 2 O, CO 2 and particulate carbon. The components are preferably fed into the generator by a burner comprising a central duct for the oxygen containing gas and two further annular ducts concentric therewith for a methine gas/hydrocarbonaceous fuel mixture and a temperature controlling gas, e.g. air, N 2 , generator effluent gas or one reduction off-gas respectively. The hydrocarbonaceous fuel may be liquefied petroleum gas, petroleum distillate fractions, shale or tar sand oil, aromatic hydrocarbons, aldehydes, ketones alcohols or waste organic liquors or a slurry of the above with a solid fuel, e.g. petroleum or coal coke, shale, tar sand or coal.
