    Abstract: Ethylene(or propylene) glycol ethers were produced by reacting H2 and CO with an aldehyde of formula RCHO(or an acetal of formula RCH(OR') 2) at at least 35 bars and 50 - 350 ≦̸C in the presence of a cobalt- contg. catalyst, a tin(or germanium)-contg. promoter, and an alcohol of formula R'OH. In the formulas, R is H or Me, and R' is C1-10 alkyl.

    Abstract: REACTION PRODUCT ADDITIVE AND ORI-INHIBITED MOTOR FUEL COMPOSITION (D#78,679-C1 -F) A novel gasoline-soluble reaction product, a concentrate comprising the reaction product dissolved in a hydrocarbon solvent, and a haze-free, deposit-resistant and ORI-inhibited motor fuel composition comprising the reaction product is described. The reaction product is obtained by reacting a dibasic acid anhydride, a novel diamine containing block copolymers with polyoxyalkylene backbones, and a hydrocarbyl polyamine. Motor fuel compositions containing the reaction product additive of the instant invention are haze-free and show improved deposit-resistance and ORI control in comparison with motor fuels without the reaction product. Motor fuel compositions of the instant invention may optionally comprise a polyolefin polymer/copolymer component having a molecular weight range of about 500-3500.

    Abstract: IMPROVED EPOXIDATION PROCESS USING MOLYBDENUM CATALYSTS (D#80, 313-F) A method of preparing an epoxide compound by reacting an olefinically unsaturated compound with an organic hydroperoxide in the presence of a molybdenum catalyst is described. Selectivity to the epoxide is at least 96%, conversion of the hydroperoxide is at least 96%, yield to the epoxide is at least 94% and recovery of the catalyst is at least 90%. These excellent results are accomplished by using a molybdenum catalyst, such as a molybdenum complex of 2-ethyl-1-hexanol, at a concentration of 100 to 1000 ppm based on total charge, preferably 200 to 600 ppm. The mole ratio of olefinically unsaturated compound to organic hydroperoxide is preferably in the range of 0.9:1 to 3.0:1 and the reaction temperature is preferably in the range of 50 to 180.degree.C. It was further surprisingly discovered that the method of this invention works much better with t-butyl hydroperoxide as the organic hydroperoxide than with other hydroperoxides, such as cumene hydroperoxide.

    Abstract: Ethylene or propylene glycol ethers (the latter generally together with the corresponding alkoxy acetone) can be obtained in good yield and selectivity by reacting hydrogen, carbon monoxide and an aldehyde or acetal of the formula. RCHO or RCH(OR')2 wherein R is hydrogen or methyl and R' is C1-10 alkyl, in the presence of a cobalt-containing catalyst and an alcohol of the formula R'OH at a pressure of at least 35 bars and a temperature of 50 to 350.degree.C. The reaction is conducted in the presence of a tin-containing compound or a germaniumcontaining compound as catalyst promoter. Formaldehyde or an acetal thereof or a formaldehyde-releasing compound is generally reacted at a temperature of from 50 to 300.degree.C and a pressure from 70 to 350 bars to give a product containing ethylene glycol ethers, while acetaldehyde or an acetal thereof is reacted at a temperature of 50 to 350.degree.C and a pressure of 70 to 700 bars to give a product containing propylene glycol ether of the formulae and and an alkoxyacetone of the formula CH3-CO-CH2-OR '

    Abstract: D. 75,758-1-FB METHOD OF PREPARING ALIPHATIC CARBOXYLIC ACIDS Carboxylic acids having 2 to 6 carbon atoms can be converted into their higher homologues by heating the acids with synthesis gas (carbon monoxide and hydrogen) at a pressure of at least 500 psi (35.5 bars) in the presence of a catalyst comprising a palladium or nickel compound (e.g. an oxide or salt of palladium or nickel, or a nickel carbonyl or hydrocarbonyl ) and a group VB ligand (e.g. triphenylphosphine), and an iodide or bromide promoter (e.g. a palladium or nickel halide, or a separately-included alkyl halide). Homologous acids having one more carbon atoms than the starting acid are formed with good selectivity.
